Browser Tor -- My Review

I was having all kinds of problems with all the browsers...Mozilla, Chrome and Edge.  I thought it was my computer, but after using Tor, the problems have ceased.  Tor protects your privacy, but at a cost.

Some of the cons are that Tor does not store your URL, so you have to type it in every time.  It does not seem to let Yahoo remember my passwords, so I have to jump through hoops to log in every day.  Some things Tor just won't do, such as it wouldn't let me download LibreOffice (which had been erased when I did a last-ditch desparation system reset to cure the problems of browsers freezing, running slow scripts, etc. multiple times a day).  It also does not show embedded youtubes on other sites, or the videos on the youtube site, so you have to use a different browser for those kinds of things.

Part of the way it protects your privacy is to bounce your searches all over the planet.  IDC comes up from Denmark (though in English) and my searches have been to Romania (which set off Yahoo's security alerts), and the Netherlands (which site came up in Dutch, not English).

So.... is the price too steep for security?  You decide.  I don't go to lots of sites, so I'm okay with it, and just happy it works.

There seems to be a connection between Tor and Mozilla.  I like Mozilla the best of all the browser, but even it was having problems.  Tor lets you disable scripts, the evil ones that seem to cause the problems.

Anyway, there are probably ways around the above perceived problems, I just haven't found them yet as this was just my first test drive.

It appears that Tor shops around the net looking for non-java script enabled sites, hence the various sites being pulled up in and out of country.  Since this site runs on java script and there is no non-java-script site, I can't use Tor on this site.  I noticed IDC comes up as idc.fr rather than idc.com, in English, but there are no links to articles, each article in full is posted on the main page, which slows down browsing through the articles.

  • I use CCleaner, too.  That didn't help this problem.  I get messages that a script is taking too long to execute, I click on stop script and that link is dead.

The only problems I seem to have with Mozilla is the amount of temporary files I collect on my hard drive so I downloaded a free apt called Ccleaner that un clogs my C drive and cleans my registration of errors. I have to reenter some passwords but am up and running quickly. I know people who fry their harddrive every two years and mine is 8 years old.
