Though there is presently enough food on the planet to feed 10 billion people, 795 million people still go to bed hungry every night. It’s for this reason that a number of innovative citizens have dedicated their talents to developing effective ways one might grow food in both urban and harsh environments. Philipp Saumweber, CEO of Sundrop Farms, is but one individual who has discovered how to do just that.

The Sundrop Farm presently cultivates 18,000 tomato plants in an Australian desert using nothing more than sunlight and seawater. Crops are grown in a hydroponic greenhouse lined with water-drenched cardboard, which means there is no need for soil, fossil fuels, groundwater, or pesticides.

Located near Port Augusta in Australia, the 20-hectare farm opened its doors in October of 2016. Though it cost $200 million to build, Saumweber is confident the facility will pay itself off in the future. After all, there will be no need to purchase fossil fuels, though hooking up to ‘the grid’ during winter might be necessary at times.

  • yep, and hate to be a stickler but our new Pres elect has reported several billion himself and then there's always those over paid entertainers in Jollywood.  There's so much money out there in the few that could care for millions upon millions.  I guess now is a good time to mention the "donation" racket where the "foundations" can keep 60 % or more of all money sent in for the good cause and they say is Saudi Arabia converted their oil pipelines to water they could replenish all of the continent.

  • That is exactly true and my opinion also. Thought of people like Bill Gates is beyond unbelievably evil.

  • Screw Hillary and the rest of em.  I refuse to call myself deplorable or a useless eater.  It's not for their purpose that I'm on this earth.   The people that have the means to help and don't are the deplorables, imo

  • Jen being a deplorable and a useless eater is hard to live up to. Maybe we need to value life more to compensate for their lack.

  • The reason people go to bed hungry, is not because there is not enough food in the world.  It costs $$$$$ to buy food.  Guess who hoards a good deal of $$$$$ and resources?  Food is wasted every day, tons of it, like what is not sold (the perishables at grocery stores gets thrown away).  And it's the unfortunate who suffer the most.

I am glad to see new methods of growing foods.  I like hydroponics because it is supposed to be clean, that is no pesticides used.  Any how, same goes for this if one does not have enough $$$$ they are not able to buy food.

  • yes Byron but maybe because they value life so poorly.

  • I think we have been made to think that desalinization was too expensive for us to use.
