  • The thing to do is pour murky water through a towel into a bucket and then Berkey the preliminary water.  You can also boil water then Berkey it, if very questionable.

I've had mine for 15 years, which I think might be a different model, the British Berkefeld with the Doulton filters.  I think Berkey as a brand name came out later and may be a different manufacturer.  But, Health Ranger has tested the Berkey and sounds like it gets really good results.

  • got a berkey back before 2012, so useful, even used it on tap water when I moved. I should stock up on more filter elements. I would trust it to filter a mountain (or any) stream adequately, I wouldn't task it with mud or algae though.

  • Yes.  I had no problem with kidney stones until I moved to the east coast.  A change in water.

  • We use a filter in the water system of our refrigerator.  Reason being our well has a high concentration of hard calcium and it is not good for one to consume this every single day.  We never drink from the tap, only from the fridge and I use the water from the fridge also for cooking.  No wonder people get kidney stones...

  • Filters most heavy metals and radiologicals.
