Surprising, and fun. I had a boyfriend back in the day who was Assyrian Iranian.  His family was lovely: warm and fun-loving, and the food was yummy, yummy, yummy:  dookh (the yogurt and mint drink), kebabs:  chelow (ground beef strips), juji (chicken), shish kebabs (beef and vegetables, the shish is the skewer), the spice samakh, the dolmas (grape leaves or cabbage), Turkish coffee (yuck on taste, but the fortune readings were fun).

Lamb testicles are a delicacy.  I was tricked into tasting it.  Smelled delicious when grilled with onions, but when boyfriend's father wouldn't say what it was, I was suspicious.  Everyone laughed and said, Eat, Eat.  So, I ate.  Never trust a twinkle in a Persian father's eye.  Never.

The Assyrians are Christian and were/are a persecuted minority in Iran.  This family left because of the Muslim persecution in the late sixties.  About a decade later the Shah was deposed and the Islamic revolution happened.

Never believe all people ("them") are bad.  They aren't.  It's the leadership that has gone bad.  Haven't we learned that lesson here in America?  Are "we" DC?  No.
