Storms Cause Widespread Power Failure Across Pakistan: Protests Against Outages Turn Violent

by The Extinction Protocol
July 31, 2012PAKISTAN - Prolonged and widespread power outage in most of Pakistan’s cities during scorching summer heat has triggered violent protests in most areas of the country. Coupled with hot and humid summer weather, the prolonged blackout has forced outraged citizens to take to the streets to protest the tough living conditions. The protests turned violent as some of the angry protesters reportedly attacked offices of the power supply department in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, damaging official and private properties. Offices of Pepco, the Pakistan Electric Power Company, were also attacked in Islamabad, Abbottabad, Charsadda, Okara, Multan, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, and Sheikhupura and many of them were reportedly set ablaze. No loss of life was reported, but the roads were blocked till late night. Reports indicate that in some areas people face 12 to 14 hours of rolling blackouts, while the rural residents suffer up to 18 hours of power outage. On Friday, a powerful storm hit some of the country’s power plants, including one of Chashma Nuclear Power Plants and three other plants in Muzaffargarh, causing them to go fully or partly offline. In the meantime, Information Minister Zamar Kaira deflected the blame for the angry protests, saying they have been caused by “political maneuvering of the PML-N (Pakistan Muslim League (N))” rather than the prolonged outages. Pakistan’s lack of around 5,000 megawatts of electrical power has forced the government to implement a rolling blackout policy in a bid to prevent a total blackout. –Press TV

Hi Lothar.. Few months back I planned to go PNG from Vanuatu. After knowing security reason I backed off. 24 hrs you need armed guard. Some 9 tribals with different languages mostly robbers. In fact you stay safe in prison and have good sleep.

Keith  I never really thought about favors going that far but there used everywhere else so why not. I suspect that the Smart Meters will make it easier for the elite to steal by simple adjustments. This situation in two countries at the same time is a little suspicious since they are next to each other. Makes me wonder if TPTB are not testing to see what would be the result of EMP's.

Kannan, no country has uncorrupted officials. Even here in Mongolia, follow the money and one can see the corruption.

I know about the non-meters. For example, my wife's stepfather was a Prime Minister. He owned this apartment at one time and still we don't have a water meter like most other apartments that I have been in.

In addition, the electricity for 50% of this apartment is sourced by the common areas of the building; so we don't get charged, the entire building does. We don't abuse it, but that is just how the system works.

Both countries have bad admin govt staffs. When these crisis happens people take chance and take them left and right. One may be surprised to know lots of rich do use more electricity without meters and pay a small bribe to the govt staffs.

You have said rightly. The systems and regulations are formed in such a way only the rich are getting more richer and the poor .... Only parlimentarians have been given the authority to change but they wouldn't as they make multi millions.

But hoping a new revolution is coming up...

Not much sense going on in this world. I think there are some underlying reasons.

I suspect that since dealing with the US and their supply routes through Pakistan to Afghanistan, the rich are getting extremely rich and the poor getting even poorer.

What kind of mental disorder causes one to attack the office of the electric company.
