Groceries on the rise

I went to grocery store yesterday and some items went up a lot, especially coffee.  It went from 7.99 to 11.99 in a week.  I saw eggs  went up about 25 cents.  There was little flour left on shelves.  I drink coffee all day long and will hate to have to cut back.  The coffee was the big round can of Folgers. Has any one else seen a big increase in anything?

  • Same here Pat we can get a loaf of whole wheat bread for 94 cents per loaf.

But the prices of flour and sugar as well as rice and corn have gone up quite a bit.

Wheat prices have doubled or more on the futures markets over the last month due to a combination of forces. In particular, the fact that Russia banned all wheat exports due to its severe wildfires. And then the floods in Pakistan wiped out their entire wheat crop.

Of course, bread prices have already been rising heavily in the last couple of years. I usually buy my bread from the week old half-price bin and still pay $2 per loaf.

  • I thought I was imagining things. I noticed many items had gone up by about $ within a week.
  • Another thing to consider is that all these prices going up, is a hidden way to devalue the dollar, we can expect more of this...
  • Hey Kim I found a place that sells tea plants, you can grow your own, the black tea that most of us drink is just the green tea smoked, like tobacco. Let me know if you want to know more... e

I've noticed tea as well has gone up some in the past few years (I am not a coffee drinker)
  • Another thing that I have noticed is the size of packaging. The price doesn't change but the amount being sold has gone down. Remember 3lb cans of coffee? No more, and the size of Johnsonville bratwurst has gone down so it doesn't look like the price has gone up. Canned vegetables and soups have done the same thing. Smaller sizes with little or no price increase to start with and then the price goes up! Ice cream comes to mind as well. What used to be half gallons is now smaller! LOL They assume that we are stupid!

  • I discovered that in my local area I can know longer find the type of tea bags in individually wrapped paper. I can only get the loose bags, I looked at three local stores. It seems to me that companies are cost cutting in these odd small ways, and we may begin to start seeing shortages, too. Southeast Asia is a big tea producing area for the world. I've noticed a few other things that were once available are no longer available. Early signs of shortages????

  • Maxwell House was 6.99 here too. It is a matter of time before it goes up as well. I am going later to get more before it does. I would hate to think coffee got to high to buy,but it could.

A big round can of Maxwell House runs about 6.99 at our grocery store. Folgers the same. Walmart sells it for a little cheaper. Now, it could be more expensive the next time I go shopping!
  • It seems that I rarely get out of the market without spending at least $50 and that is for a day or 2's food at the most. I live in the worlds bread basket yet even at the farm I buy fresh produce at, yes I drive out to a farm, I pay $2 a pound for fresh tomatoes and the farmer is my cousin! LOL! I bought a 3lb can of Folgers at Sam's Club on Friday for $9.98. I find fairly good prices on meat but I tend to buy things like a whole pork loin or 10lb tube of ground beef and then cut and/or repackage it for the freezer myself. I bought a whole ribeye @$3.99lb and cut it into steaks myself and then froze it. That was $56 and it retails, cut for about $8.99lb here in Iowa. That is how I save on meats but staples, bread, milk, etc. are out of control!
