At least one person has died as Hurricane Ida continues to batter the southern US state of Louisiana.

The hurricane was packing maximum sustained winds of 153km/h at one point, and the powerful storm knocked out power for all of New Orleans. Ida slammed into the Louisiana coast as a Category 4 storm but had weakened to a Category 1 by last night.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said Ida could be the most powerful storm to hit the state since 1850.

The memory of Katrina, which made landfall on 29 August 2005, is still fresh in Louisiana, where it caused some 1,800 deaths and billions of dollars in damage.

"It's very painful to think about another powerful storm like Hurricane Ida making landfall on that anniversary," Mr Edwards had previously said.

It is reported to be stronger than Hurricane Katrina and occurred on the 16th anniversary of Katrina - strange coincidence! It is a message from God!
