Pope Francis has met 13 victims of clerical sexual abuse this evening, the Vatican has said, on the first day of his visit to Portugal for a major Catholic youth festival.
The Pope said the Catholic Church needs a "humble and ongoing purification" to deal with the "anguished cries" of victims of clerical sexual abuse ahead of an expected meeting with some of them in Portugal later this week.
