Last night while researching another topic, I stumbled onto a new reality series coming out from the Discovery Channel.  It's about a group of people thrown together after a biological catastrophe, and how they try to build a survival community with each other.

It's not like I have time to watch any series, so I may not get a chance to watch this, and I imagine most of us don't, but I'm sharing this because I'm wondering if this is something we may need to think about in the future.

This may also be an ice breaker kind of program to share with people resistant to hearing about the need to prepare. These reality shows are good water cooler, coffee break conversation starters.  In the past, I often used them to share info that I hoped would be helpful to people in the future, in a way that did not feel threatening to people.  (Ergo, they laugh and smile with me when we discuss the finer points of how to heat water and food in a compost pile, or to compost dead people, it's amazing how open people become when they don't feel pressed upon.  It's hard to receive information when we feel like we're being suffocated because we don't have the psychological space to breathe.  I give people plenty of space to think I'm crazy, and love me for it, I think it is what was once called eccentric.)   ;)

The real challenge of the AfterTime is how humans deal with humans after we have survived the Pole Shift.  We may learn something if we check in on this series from time to time about the human element of survival and rebuilding communities.

  • Hi Alex, I'm curious about your phrase, "here's to hoping", does it mean that here's to hoping we would find ourselves with such a eclectic group, or is there something else about this group that I missed, do they have more skills base/ knowledge, or maybe they're all more fit, or what?

Just wondering how your mind is working on this ;)

One of things I found interesting is that it looks like they're going to be forced to have to deal with some real difficult issues, and it seems to be focussing on community building, appears to me that the 1st episode is about communicating.

There is also this component that I think many of us may want to consider, and this is that Discovery Channel
chose a biological disaster for this series format. I agree with Joan C. There are some indications that someone is trying to slip in ways to help people prepare for the changes. Given the Gulf Oil Spill event, the many other oil spill/explosion events in China, and Russia, the webbot report about a cloud of death rising up out of the Gulf, and settling at the base of a crescent-shaped mountain on top of a city, (Which may be somewhere at the base of the Appalachians since that is the natural way the wind blows) as well as some of the analysis that I'm seeing Shadow put together in his Nuking the Navy blog, and just so much more, we might want to think about preparing for this sort of events well before the Pole Shift.

It is also uncanny the timing of this series. Maybe????
