"Clarke County officials are working to determine what caused an oil well explosion Friday afternoon.

According to reports from the Clarke County Sheriff’s Department, the incident occurred around 4:15 p.m. Friday on County Road 280, in Clarke County.

The site of the explosion was about a mile off of U.S. Highway 11 near the West Brothers Store. The Associated Press reported that the facility is owned by Denbury Resources, Inc., of Laurel.

Preliminary reports did not reveal any fatalities with the incident.  However, one injury was reported.

Officials also evacuated residents within a mile of the site, which is near the Jasper-Clarke County line.

All questions concerning the incident were being referred to Clarke County Fire Coordinator Jeff Arrington, who was at the site of the incident and not available for questioning.

Efforts to reach officials with the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency at press time were not successful."
