There are other signs that will precede the pole shift. One of them is flooding. The general rule of thumb is to be 100 miles inland from any coastline and at least 200 feet in elevation.

HOWEVER, that rule does not apply for the Eastern Seaboard south of NYC.  "The advice to be 100 miles inland and 200 feet above sea level does not apply along the southern portion of the Eastern Seaboard of the US, where we advise being 1,000 feet above sea level."
