So, events are threatening to overtake us, it seems and the wise and the quick footed are the ones who will survive what seems to be coming upon us. Now we have the inestimable Jim Maccaney who rises way above the rest in these matters, in my opinion, and now we have his statement, courtesy of Cheryl posting the link, we can take stock of the situation. For those in other counters the situation is quite a bit different from those in Northern Europe and my own country, the UK where we have a different set of priorities or shall we say we are focused on one set more than another. For the situation will be the same for all mankind if these events come to pass. We are far more densely populated here than the States, or Canada, and the majority have no way of getting into the hills,, and I assume lets say, thirty percent will be trapped in the towns and cities, maybe much more. They could become places of great horror and distress.....avoid the cities at all costs
So, what am i doing? First making a list using a spreadsheet, of all the things one needs for minimum three months without the basics of water and electricity supply. Then slowly, devoting so much money a month, first by collecting those items such as soap, candles, tissues, and paper towels, , and basic foodstuffs, things which will be used whatever happens. Then assuming this is real and we are in for some severe earthchanges, let alone a near extinction level event, I will then focus on such things as propane gas, firelighters, basic tools, and building supplies, etc etc.
I am going into silent mode now, and doing some research on various things, geophysical phenomena, and solar dynamics, and seeing just what is starting to happen.
For me survival is not so much how long I am on this planet but in what circumstances, it is the quality of my days here, and this is what matters, so, get the basics sorted out then sleep at night. A quick mention of water here. I am aiming for 100 five liter bottles of spring water, at least sixty, and this should last, assuming three litres per day, about three to four weeks. Then, I intend to supplement this with water taken from the roof via downspouts, and stored in several water buts which I may increase to ten if need be. I intend to have plenty of propane gas and I have a small barbecue and gas fire, so this is taken care of and if we really go through an event such as happened eleven thousand years ago I will depart from my house and take to the road, the open hills. For me that is easy to do, but families are not so inclined to do this. We all have our own priorities. The very hardest thing, is it be surrounded by those who simply have no idea and whose food supply s rapidly diminishing ir even zero. How to deal with this I have no real idea at all....
so, these are my thoughts, and we will see if thus all a false alarm or if indeed we are being visited by the red dwarf, ( am more apt to think this incoming body is a red dwarf rather than a much colder brown dwarf) and its planets once more. As things stand it would seem to be the case.
One othet thing, I intend to open a browser specifilacclyy with links in it to geophsycla data sites and site suhc as this so all my inforation js keot close t hand. have sevek browsers on Linux i can use but it al takes organsiedng. ths whole thing can be either a lot ikf fun and an enhanckent of life ir ti can be tge cause kf depression and alarm and sleepless nights. it js up to eahc one if us how we dela with htis, those on this forum are far better bae ti surve inrct what is coming thna th avergage person, whih is sad fr we shoul all have the same chance. life is eldom fair.
so, I hope my above thoughts are of benefit to those who may read them, I would sum it up in this epithet, 'don't despair and simply stand there looking at it, get your tools out and fix it!!!!' that is how I approach these matters. .
one last thought, I am thinking of buying several packets of heirloom seeds, just in case....

a quick thought. how about assuming a lifetime f five year sin careful dry storage for the seeds, then allow three packets per year, which makes fifteen packets all in all. then as we get used to taking seeds from our plants, and labeling them, by the fifth year, we should have all the seeds we can handle. but five years will give us plenty of practice.
I have a pretty nice collection of heirloom seeds
Since you are on the subject of heirloom seeds, have a look at sites that talks about vegetable and fruits that have now disappear from farms, but still available from private owners. If you need squash seeds let me know. We have lots here in Canada.
as far as seeds go, I am not expert, but it makes sense to have several as they should last two years or more in a fridge. what really matters in times of catastrophe assuming we are in this mode, is to be able to grow plants, and take and store seeds. again, I am not an expert, but lets us say we have two packets of heirloom seeds and they need to be age old varieties, mainly, at least, then the third packet can be used for taking seeds for the next season, . assume you have thirty cabbage plants, let five be used for seed, the rest eaten. the amount of seed left over after you keep some of them, can then be labeled, and given to others to grow.
My correction to some appalling typing in the last paragraphs of my post, sorry for the bad typing
