The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been two hundred
years.
These nations have progressed through this sequence:
From bondage to spiritual faith;
From spiritual faith to great courage;
From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to selfishness;
From selfishness to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependence; My opinion is that we are here right now going to dependence.
From dependency back again into bondage.
It's a combination of many factors, I think. It is just like book burning. It is censorship. It's a destruction of heritage. We are no longer a free people. Freer than some, yes, but the freedoms we once enjoyed are passing quietly into the night. Yeats had it right, the world won't end with a bang, but a whimper.
And the words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer still echo true: They came for the Jews, but I wasn't a Jew and so did nothing. They came for the Confederate flag, but I wasn't a Southron and so did nothing. But we know where that line of thinking ends... right at the feet of Nazi Germany.
