Interesting Paul. I bought the book last year and read it all. No women were part of the human crew. It appear that Steven Spielberg knew about this exchange because he used the same event in his movie "Close Encounter of the Third Kind." One crew member died soon after arriving in Serpo. The Ebens were rather obsess by the body to the point that the commander felt they were desecrating him. The reason they stayed longer then forcasted was cause by Serpo's rotation. The Ebens could not understand the difference between human years and their own.
