Each state should become self-sustaining, according to its resources. That way, if one area is impacted (like the midwest and spring floods, or the coming mini-ice age, or a transportation problem, each individual state won't have to suffer. I'm talking about basics here. This could include pre-positioning of food and supplies, development of agriculture amenable to that state's climate. In a situation like we are in now, perhaps the transport of oranges from Florida or Texas became faulty, orange juice supplies would be pre-positioned in states that are unable to produce oranges (should oranges be deemed a basic supply). Maybe wheat can't get to Florida or Texas, supplies of wheat could be pre-positioned in Florida and Texas. Maybe large cities and states should have their own fleet of trucks to go fetch, in addition to the normal fleets, to use in times of emergency. Maybe just-in-time inventory needs to be re-thought. Each store carrying an inventory would be another way of achieving the above. For the mini-ice age, every state or region should develop underground gardens (several feet below grown, with a plastic roof above so sunlight can get in). I read where England grew cucumbers in the 1800s winter because they dug a tunnel under the garden bed and had fires going.
In other words, there are solutions. We, as a country, state by state, need to find what works and develop it so that basic human needs are met in the event of a crisis.
This video reflects ice age farmers allegations of the food crisis. There's a disconnect between the market and the farmers. It's the supply chain that is problematic that is why there must be innovative approach to solve this matter. The produce can't reach the market hence it's thrown away. The problem is how to address the multitude of problems besetting the farmers and the market. In an ideal situation the farm products are brought o a canning facility so it can be stored for a long time. So you have a predicament where people are starving and farmers go bankrupt.
