This is written by Holly Deyo, a preparedness guru, and well worth the read. Here is something I hadn't considered:

"Try to locate a bugout not made of wood or with a shake shingle roof or with a wood deck attached. If someone tries to burn you out, the less combustibles available, the better. That said, many of the 359 homes lost in Colorado’s largest-ever fire this summer were built out of stucco with tiled roofs. When a fire is ferocious enough, nothing will stop it. However, fire resistant construction materials give you an edge against flame-throwing intruders."

  • Dianna, yes.  I didn't invent the black-out curtains, lol.  But where there is light, there are people, where there are people, there may be food too.  Best to give no intel whatsoever.

And pop-tops are neat.  Just make sure they don't cost more than regular cans.  We all need every penny to prepare these days.

  • You are taking a walk through history, Cheryl... in WWII, all lights had to be shut off at twilight, or blocked, here in USA, and, I recall that was the case in London, too, when they were being bombed on a daily basis.

On a different note, I especially like those 'zip top' cans where you do not need can opener...

  • The security door sounds good.  As for cooking, I've read cooking underground makes for little smoke (and presumably scents).  It won't be just people that will be attracted to smell, think hungry black bears (which we have in this area).

I read that piece about leaving the light on.  If you are under surveillance and you turn it off, it says someone is home.  But better yet, when things get tough, put up light-blocking curtains so no light will show at all.

  • Did you see the piece where it said, if the power goes out then comes back on, that if you had a certain light on... leave it on.. do not change your lighting.. off and on... Try to be invisible.. and cook with a minimum of wonderful scents, and quick... Scent wafts quickly in a breeze... I am having a new storm door installed, that when you close it, actually has a dead bolt for the second lock, and can be locked if you are 'out'.. like traveling, and opens with a key... Only was 50$ more than regular door... I said.. That's the one for me...

  • Yes it does.  I was considering adding a wooden deck, but now I don't think so.

  • Leaves you thinking.
