  • Yes Kim,  you  are  right  the  wood  ash is used in  place of  the  lye.  Its  acid make up reacts the same way  with  fat that lye  would.  Hence  why they are  telling you  in  this post   that the  greasier the  pan the  better  the  soap.  The  process is  called  saponification.
