And yes, it is predicted most people (say 90%) would be dead within the first six months of an event like that. So, best option is just get away from people for that period of time and wait it out.
Any group surviving would need guns to protect themselves and their food supply. It would be war. I don't think anyone would survive it; they would kill each other for supplies.
