The best solution I've seen is to legalize the plant and allow enough plants per person for personal use.  No sales.  No distribution.  This eliminates the middleman and the crime. 

I'm surprised to hear marijuana is linked to violence.  Most domestic violence reports I've seen usually result from alcohol use.  Alcohol should really be targeted for elimination.
