| An outbreak of cholera hit the Espaillat Province in northern Dominican Republic on Sunday, with 35 cases confirmed among more than 100 people treated in public and private hospitals. Health Minister Freddy Lugo ordered in Santiago de los Caballeros to reinforce services, said the affected area’s director, Dr. Domingo Perez. Official reports say the worst situation are registered in Las Amapolas, La Bandada, Guauci Abajo, Paso de Moca, La Ermita, Cuero Duro and other communities at San Victor municipal district and Moca municipality. On Saturday, 32 people were in critical condition in Toribio Besconse hospital, its director Pedro Arroyo said. From the first case detected in November 2010, which came from the border with Haiti through last August, cholera has affected 26,253 people with 408 deaths. | |
