The roof of a building that housed a beauty-supply business and a small grocery store has caved in, weeks after a sinkhole swallowed part of the building.
The sinkhole, in the area of Main Street and East Street, may appear larger as a result — also because soil around the edges of the hole has fallen in — but the sinkhole itself has not expanded, Robert Sargent, the city's public-outreach coordinator, said today.
"We do not have any indication of it growing," Sargent said.
The sinkhole was discovered June 27 and is estimated to be 60 feet wide. Sargent said the city can't estimate the depth of the sinkhole because the bottom is covered by groundwater. A dumpster, two oak trees and a plethora of hair-care products have fallen in.
The building is owned by Rafeek Mohamid, 52, who operated Main Street Hair & Beauty Supply there. Part of the building also housed the Saaraa Corner Store. Mohamid said his store's stock of products cost about $690,000. The building was valued at more than $200,000 for tax purposes, according to the Lake County property appraiser's website.

The sinkhole now measures 20 feet wide and 10 feet deep. It spans the width of a street and has started destroying a driveway. Repair costs could run close to $220,000.
City spokesman Don Gross linked the sinkhole to the collapse of a sewer, which happened when Missouri River flooding raised the water table.

Charlotte North Carolina : Sinkhole Closes Lanes On Sharon Road At Wendover July 22, 2011

Police closed the intersection of Sharon and Wendover roads in south Charlotte before 8 a.m. Friday after a sinkhole formed in the roadway. The road was partially reopened early Friday afternoon to traffic in both directions. Officials have not provided an estimate of how long the repairs will take.
The hole looks small, but the cavity underneath the pavement extends from the center line across all of the outbound lanes of traffic to the curb, officials said.
Officials said the sinkhole is near a recent asphalt patch at a water valve. Workers were called to the scene early Friday, but there is no estimate on when the repairs will be completed.

Sinkhole In Hoboken Repaired After Disrupting Traffic : New York July 22, 2011

City officials have reopened the street, and contractors have filled the sinkhole with gravel, though the area is still surrounded by orange cones.
The filling is a temporary fix, and will be sealed to prevent the hole from growing, officials said.
The fix will eliminate the possibility of the sinkhole growing to the size of one that plagues Sinatra Drive. The hole on Sinatra Drive, which collapsed in October 2010, measures 50 feet long by 25 feet wide and is eight feet deep.
The state Department of Transportation agreed to assist Hoboken with a $1.5 million payment in March for repairs that were supposed to be done in June. The repairs are not complete.
The city has made steps to opening the waterfront area, including removing fencing around the Hudson Tea after analysis from engineers which deemed the area safe for pedestrians, the city announced.

SINKHOLE FORMS UNDER GUATEMALAN WOMAN'S BED July 22, 2011
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUWi5ZTs7bM
The sinkhole that appeared late Monday was 12.2 metres deep and 80 centimeters in diameter, an AFP journalist who visited the site reported.
The hole is tiny compared to giant sinkhole that formed nearby in 2007 that was 100 meters deep and swallowed several homes and a truck, killing three people. Area residents were forced to evacuate for days.
A 2010 sinkhole also in the same area, measuring 18 metres wide and about 30 meters deep, swallowed a three-story building and a nearby house when it suddenly formed.
"When we heard the loud boom we thought a gas canister from a neighboring home had exploded, or there had been a crash on the street," said Inocenta Hernandez, a 65 year-old widow.
"We rushed out to look and saw nothing. A gentleman told me that the noise came from my house, and we searched until we found it under my bed," said Hernandez.
"Thank God there are only material damages, because my grandchildren were running around the house, into that room and out to the patio," she said.
Police, members of the country's natural disaster office and water utility company officials came to visit the site.
Sinkholes, formed by the natural process of erosion, can be gradual but are often sudden.
Guatemala City, built on volcanic deposits, is especially prone to sinkholes, often blamed on a leaky sewer system or on heavy rain.
