Roundabout - What's going on?

In my area on one of the main roads going into the city they took down a good bridge to replace it with a roundabout.  They are making the main road two lanes in each direction and putting in a roundabout in my town and also one in the next town two miles away.  Now I have wondered what dummy took out a good bridge to put in the dumb driving circle, when it hit me.  When the quakes start and the bridges fall down accross the roads below every thing comes to a halt.  But if there is no bridge to fall there will be less of a problem.  Simply cover the cracks with gravel and bulldose the piled up stuff.   Now my question is are any bridges comming down and being replaced by driving circles in your area of the country?  It realy is a good idea!  10957994462?profile=original

  • Jim  Thats the right way to make a roundabout. Airborne bro
  • Byron, I found a picture of the driving circle in the 82nd Airborne yearbook from 1960-61. It was on HY 87 between Spring Lake and Fayetteville.  The good old days!  Airborne!2967644904?profile=original
  • Mary V  It makes perfect sence to not build bridges at all as Jim saw in his area also.
  • They just happened to mention on the news about some construction area in Sioux Falls, South Dakota (I THINK they also referenced a bridge!)...and that they had now made a roundabout in that area....made me wonder, now....
  • Keith   I believe we may be talking about the same circle in Flemington NJ.  Jim I was stationed at Fort Bragg and remember that circle and belive it was quite large probably for military equiptment and it was not a bad one as I remember in 1968. It was near which ever gate went to Fayetteville. I am sure my vision was impared at that point of my life.
  • I use to drive around one in North Carolina near Fayettiville. It was no problem. Or maybe it was on fort Bragg, I dont remember after 50 years! I will have to look into that one.
  • Jim  I too live in a very friendly area and there is a circle near me that is not to bad. The one in Jersey was the worst I saw maybe to close to New york city where drivers are insane. The two I saw in Reno NV were a mess also. Like Alex said until people get used to them there is a spike in accidents.
  • ROFL a jerk circle!!!  MSred - where do you live as the building industry in my area has died.  There is some building going on if you travel an hour to DC, or to Baltimore.  But that's about it.
  • Bryon.  I lived in this area for about 35 years and have never seen anyone say that I am #1, or as you put it a finger salute.   The area has mostly small towns and it seems that everyone knows everyone, so i have never even heard anyone blow a horn at someone else!  Once a women pulled out in front of me from a parking space.  We both stoped and she rolled down her window and said " I am sorry! "  Living here is already like living in the after time STO type town.
  • In New Jersey they call them jerk circles because they bring out the best in people. It is likely that you will get at least one, single finger salute while trying to negociate  these circles from hell. Lots of accidents, and lots of road rage.
