Anyone who knows anything about algae, especially blue-gree algae knows that under nice condtions they function as single celled organisms. Under stress they coagulate and form algal mats and move together in unison forming a giant carpet. As a unitary entity they can survive better. They even have leader cells amongst them to prompt them to come together. The social structure of algae was even used to promote a social model of behaviour for humans not so long ago, along with ants and termites. Stress to algae is altered chemical or electric environments, adverse weather or lack of food. So, this giant mat we see suggests leadrers of algae are pulling their teams together to cope with this abnormal stress!!! px...A very large stress situation as we see. Algal mats are a sign to look out for as the geochemical composition of the earth starts to change.
