Astronomers Observe Colossal Saturn Storm

"Such planet-wide weather disturbances are rare on Saturn, where the atmosphere is typically hazy and calm. Since 1876, astronomers have observed only five other megastorms on Saturn.

“This is a one-of-a-kind storm,” said Andrew Ingersoll, a self-described planetary weatherman at the California Institute of Technology, who was part of the discovery team."

  • So, Elenin recently crossed Mars' orbit, but Saturn could be feeling the effects of the BD following Elenin?

The good doctor mentioned 7 x 36 binoculars would aid in seeing it.

  • There has been so much written about this comet.  I've read that the comet is dimishing in brightness and one will need optical aids to see it when it passes near the earth.
  • hmm...hope it will be visible by mid August....just curious...how will it look?
  • July 10th orbit...

  • It is actually pretty far:

Here is the Elenin JPL: http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=elenin;orb=1;cov=1;log=0;cad=...

You will see Saturn way far passed...and Elenin to be in our Orbit on August 1-2

  • I wonder how close the BD is to Saturn currently.
  • That's a very large storm on Saturn and Saturn is much bigger than Earth.  Uh oh.
  • Terral was saying we will observe how Saturn will react to the comet passing in is orbit and he was saying that should give us a pretty good idea of what will happen when it comes into Earth's orbit...that would be August!
  • I figured it was related to the BD influence.  Does this give us an idea of its location?  Is it moving past Saturn now?
  • There was just an alignment with saturn, elenin and the sun yesterday?
