Aussie Heat Wave

Whist the northern hemisphere is experiencing deep winter - spare a thought for us guys down south - a week long heat wave across the Australian continent is due to start today.

"Roxby Downs and Oodnadatta in South Australia's outback are set to sizzle with six days in a row above 45C (113F) and the tiny town of Tarcoola is forecast to reach 47C (117F) on Monday."

  • The Aussie heat wave has been so hot they have had to add new colors to display it on the map.

  • Not only are we having continuing record breaking heat across the country, we are now experiencing bush fires in the 3 states of Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales.

  • I agree, Cheryl, dry heat is easier to deal with than humidity.

It always used to be dry heat here in southern Australia, but during the last 10 years or so we have been becoming more and more sub-tropical. Today's top of 44C (111F) will be accompanied by increasing cloud  - so there is a slight chance of a thunder storm.

Still no where near as humid as northern Australia where they are still waiting on rains to break the big build up of humidity that happens every spring. This tends to affect most people and the term "going troppo" is quite often used to describe someone getting a bit frazzled by this atmospheric event.

  • 111F was LA Suburb heat in the summer.  115F in Las Vegas.  It's not too bad in dry heat, but it would be unlivable with humidity.  Which kind of heat do you have?

  • Although Adelaide (where I live) is on the coast - we had 39C (102F) today and are heading for 44C (111F) tomorrow. The "aircon" is getting a hammering!

  • Try to stay cool.  Take cell salts, if need be.
