  • That's what we do, Byron.  Thanks, Peter, for speaking up and setting the record straight.  Sometimes I get going on autopilot and things slip past.

  • Peter

I would much rather be wrong and know the real truth, so you actually woke me up and I thank you Peter.

Cheryl thanks for going the extra mile you did a great job. One thing about this site is that we almost always ferret the truth out.

  • Thanks Cheryl.

We (including me) all need to be so careful reading any information - many times it can either be misquoted, paraphrased or slanted with spin to often mean something completely different than what was intended. The "press" (and lets' not forget politicians) in most countries are experts at this - but so-called freedom fighting independent websites can also put their own spin on things.

On-the-ground local knowledge is very important. Although I do acknowledge that individuals can also be biased.

Through this website I have gained considerable knowledge and understanding about life in the USA - which would have been very different if I had relied entirely on press and other written reports -  the comments made on this website have enabled me to get an insight into how things are observed by locals - which has changed my perspective.

Byron, didn't mean to lecture - just stating how I observed things on the ground down under. Cheers!

  • I revisited the Infowars piece.  It prefaced the Daily Telegraph quote with, "[Carbon tax] is set to be policed by laws which forbid business owners from criticizing it for causing price rises – with thought criminals who do so under threat of being hit with huge fines of over $1 million dollars."  It used inflammatory words and phrases, like "highly unpopular," "draconian," and "thought criminals."

Then it quoted the Daily Telegraph, which stated, "SHOPS and restaurants could face fines up to $1.1 million if waiters or sales staff wrongly blame the carbon tax for price rises or exaggerate the impact,” reports the Daily Telegraph."

The Infowars piece then omitted this enlightening explanation from the Daily Telegraph, "ACCC deputy chairman Dr Michael Schaper told the Herald Sun companies were entitled to increase their prices and did not have to justify or explain why.

"It is business as usual,'' Dr Schaper said.

"But if they blamed the carbon tax they must be able to prove it and not use it as a cover for other price increases related to wages, rent or stock.

"If a business claims that a price is linked to the carbon price, that claim must be truthful and have a reasonable basis,'' he said."

But then, it added this line that wasn't even mentioned in the Daily Telegraph article: "This draconian measure will be enforced by teams of “carbon cops” who roam the streets conducting snap inspections of businesses to ensure they are not making any reference to the tax."

Either the author misunderstood the Daily Telegraph article (hard to believe) or this is biased journalism.  I'm not commenting on the alleged ramifications because I don't have time to research it, but based on Infowars' misrepresentation of some of the facts, all of what they say should be checked.

  • Peter

Thanks for the lesson, I had read so many articles about this that I thought it was all true.

Alex Jones always makes thing much worse than they are that's why I stopped watching long ago.

  • Byron, the fines referred to in your comment below Australians Face Huge Fines For Speaking Ill Of New Carbon Tax were fines to be imposed if any company used the carbon tax as an excuse to increase their prices above and beyond the actual effect of the carbon tax.

“SHOPS and restaurants could face fines up to $1.1 million if waiters or sales staff wrongly blame the carbon tax for price rises or exaggerate the impact,” reports the Daily Telegraph. This refers exactly to that - in that waiters or sales staff (or any one else) could not and should not blame price rises that are excessive of what the carbon tax was or exaggerate the impact - Nothing wrong with that!

It was / is quite legal to quote the exact amount the tax increased prices - but not to exaggerate!

It was not a general gag on talking about the tax at all! - Which you implied in your first comment.

I'm not a supporter of the tax (as I said below) but I am eager for humans (whether that be big corp or individuals) to not continue to harm the environment.

In regards to the gun buy back - I don't know anyone who had a gun during that period - and I know a lot of people. Our society is a lot different than the USA - not many have personal guns at all (either before or after the buy back). It is not an issue here as we don't have a culture of being used to having personal guns.

I will correct my earlier comment below and add that there was another handgun buy back in 2003 (- still longer than a year of two ago).

As always with any press or any comments, obviously the reader needs to be aware of the spin.

  • Australia Warns America: Don't Let Them Take Your  Guns!

Government officials and citizens  in Australia speak out to warn America "Don't Let Them Take Your Guns!"  According to reports when the Gun Ban went into effect in Australia the crime  rate spiraled out of control. The police officers are overwhelmed and are  unable  to protect the citizens due to so much crime.

When the forced gun ban (buy back program) went into effect law abiding  citizens had to turn in their semi automatic firearms, pump action rifles, and  shotguns or face going to jail. Six hundred forty thousand conventional  firearms  were taken out of the hands of law abiding citizens, confiscated and  destroyed.  Law abiding citizens followed the law and turned in their weapons.  Citizens were  promised safety in return for turning in their guns. Does any  of this sound  familiar, like UN Gun Treaty perhaps?

Since the gun ban in Australia, armed robberies are up 69%, assaults with  guns up 28%, gun murders increased 19%, and home invasions jumped 21%. More  proof that not only does gun control not work, it makes it safer for the  criminals at large. In their words

The tax whose name cannot be spoken

Paul Joseph Watson Infowars.com Friday, May 25, 2012

Praised by Barack Obama as a model for the world, Australia’s highly unpopular carbon tax, set to take effect from July 1st, is set to be policed by laws which forbid business owners from criticizing it for causing price rises – with thought criminals who do so under threat of being hit with huge fines of over $1 million dollars.

“SHOPS and restaurants could face fines up to $1.1 million if waiters or sales staff wrongly blame the carbon tax for price rises or exaggerate the impact,” reports the Daily Telegraph.

  • Peter I watched videos of the guns being turned in and read many articles about the secrecy of what effect the carbon tax was going to have on Australian business, I wonder why people would make lies up. The carbon tax was proposed by the NWO to be implemented on every country. There are many things wrong with the capitalists control of every country when it comes to environment. The statement as socialism masquerading as environmentalism is seen very well in Agenda 21. I am very glad it is being repealed.

  • The comment "socialism masquerading as environmentalism" was made in reference to a carbon tax that is in existence in Australia but is currently being repealed by the newly elected Abbott Liberal Government.

Whether the statement is true or not is a matter of opinion.

And whilst the carbon tax was / is probably not the answer to environmental issues (including climate change or carbon pollution) the Abbott Liberal Government's attitude towards cleaning up the environment is very weak - they would rather support big business than protect the environment.

I have never heard of any fines (and especially not $1million) if a business owner talks about the Carbon Tax - that is just not true. We still have a democracy (of sorts) and free speech down-under!

Funny, but it was the last Liberal Government (in which Abbott was a minister) that introduced the gun by back legislation in Australia (which was in 1996/97 - much longer than a little over a year ago). But really, Australian citizens, in recent times, have never had the need to carry arms - those who want them for hunting or sport can still acquire them even after the buy back - it's definitely a totally different situation than the USA. In Australia I have not witnessed a strong push for the "right to bear arms" - it just hasn't been an issue.
