Look at the orbital path calculator at http://stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov/comet_ison/, around the end of December 2013.  Look at the close fly-by.  However, it is pointed out that ISON is coming at a steep angle and the site states that it isn't so close.

According to this article, http://globalrumblings.blogspot.com/2013/09/comet-ison-danger-to-ea..., "On closest approach, the comet will pass about 0.0724 AU (10,830,000 km; 6,730,000 mi) from Mars on 1 October 2013, and it will pass about 0.429 AU (64,200,000 km; 39,900,000 mi) from Earth on 26 December 2013."

So, it will pass further from Earth than it did to Mars, but Earth will go through the debris trail soon after it passes.

It also says, "Astronomers say it is a new (strong) comet coming from the Oort cloud which has never before slung around the sun, and therefore has never been weakened by the heat of sun like other periodic comets."

Also, this comet is generating a lot of dust.  Could it be enough to create what's known as a nuclear winter and affect weather and crops?

  • Yes, store what you can, but be sure to know how to clean water when your supplies run out.

  • Yep.  Don't think you can store all the water you will need.  It's impossible for the average person.

  • Cool, Lee.  I've got a Berkey with Doulton filters.  I've also got a LifeSaver 4000UF, but these puppies have an expiration date!  I also have instructions on how to make a water distiller from a pressure cooker and plastic buckets.

  • If the first three days of this month are an indicator of what is coming were in for lots of crazy stuff from here on out.

  • Yeah lee and right now is the time to be chopping wood as we have had no rain for almost 2 weeks.  It is dry and dusty here...

  • I've got a four-season tent made for three people, and one -5* sleeping bag.  I need to get two more.  I also need to buy another propane tank (40 gal) and fill it and my three 5-gallon tanks up.  I have a propane heater that lights manually (no electronic ignition though the fan does run on electricity--will just use it without the fan), a propane range that can I can bypass the electronic ignition and light manually, and my dryer uses propane for heat (though has an electronic ignition).

I have a bug-out bag I can't lift, so need to spread it out.  My son has one just as heavy, but he can lift his.  In it, I have chemical heaters.  Need more.

  • I hope husband gets in some firewood soon as we don't have that much right now.  If not, he will be in the woods chain sawing dead trees (we have lots of good seasoned dead wood in our back woods)

  • The funny thing about this is that most of the bad scenario is documented except the space one so it is hard to believe it when its in training manuals. Now back to my Zombies because they may also be our future.

  • There ya go, Byron.  Stiff upper lip, man.

Lee, don't forget communications.  Even if it's walkie talkies for the neighborhood.  And heat.  If the grid is down and winter's headed our way, better lay in some firewood and have a woodstove, you know, those things the EPA is making unlawful so we are channeled into buying new, more expensive ones or going to jail for violating the law, or being legal and freezing to death.

  • Now aren't we a cheerful group I think I will go watch something light on Netflix like season 3 of the walking dead.
