European observatory will announce what it describes as "major" alien planet findings on Today (Sept. 12).

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) will hold a press conference at 10 a.m. EDT (1400 GMT) Monday to "report significant new results in the field of exoplanets," ESO officials said in a media alert.

The results were obtained with the High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher instrument, better known as HARPS, officials said. HARPS is a spectrograph on ESO's 11.8-foot (3.6-meter) telescope at La Silla Observatory in Chile. [The Strangest Alien Planets]

  • There is no foundation in religion for persons to fall back on if full disclousre happened.  Could we have "Saint Alien Grey the III"?   Give them saint hood so no harm would come to the earth?

  • Once the cat is out of the bag, it's out for good.  I do not know of any other time in know history where the earth has had the ability for instant communication like it is today.  In art and literature are the images of alien visitors from the past and even at the time of the knowing there were not the means to communicate to the whole planet like it would be today.  A full disclosure would not be in the benefit of mankind the way it is living today.  Mass panic and paranoid thinking would emerge.  Once the panic stopped a real police state would have to emerge to distinguish one from the other. Human from alien.  Not a real nice way to live.  Better to leave it alone for now and prepare the world with a sequel to "Star Wars"...."Star Wars the Rebirth, the Story Behind the Story".....
  • What would one do with an Alien like this?  Put do not disturb on the galactic highway map to bypass this planet?

  • Now that this has come up, it is rather strange that the aliens have taken such a low profile when dealing with the human species.  It almost seems like they too must obey rules of some higher council when visiting another civilization.  One of the problems that would need to be addressed it this: Once the revealment takes place how do you tell the good guys from the bad.  The ones that want to eat you from the ones that want to be your friends.  Do we have them wear bages or put on location devices on them?  Would they even comply with a request like this?  These are real issue and probalby no one really has a solution for this.
  • Makes me wonder why there was a veil placed between we earthlings and the other worlds in the first place?..  Why isn't our earth included in the"Council of the Worlds"? Why don't we spirit earthlings have a voice or a vote in all this?

Could our planet actually just be prison planet, and we simply lost our rights until we've served out our time here?

  • Morris,

    Hell of a statement.

That is that other civilizations exist in a 14 billion light year universe and that this is now good knowledge to know?
We as a society have yet to confirm this reality but the time is near at hand that we actually drop some of our conceit and realize that life is invasive, relentless and self perpetuating regardless of the environment.  The one issue I have is that even with this knowledge we are no where near actual application and use of this knowledge.  We will not be traveling to other star systems for many many years to come.  Will we, sure I think we will but not in my life time.  I am not an avid believer that we are as advanced as the gentleman who claimed to have traveled to Elenin, believes.  Guess I still see us, as monkeys with really nifty tools by comparison to space faring beings.

The new generation of adults will welcome the news, not like previous generations who wanted to hide and live in dead and outdated ideas.
Its a bit of a stretch of the imagination to think that the next generation will embrace new ideas and facts considering they were more than likely raised by the prior generation who kept such notions at arms length.....  And to say that prior generations wanted to hide and live in dead and outdated ideas is also off because it lumps a huge grouping of people into closed minded antiquity, please keep in mind that there have been forward thinking individuals throughout the ages and that we simply have a tiny sample of the past, which we already know was written by the victors.....  I personally feel that we are more close minded now than we were prior to industrialization.  Just my thoughts.

Some interesting images here...makes me wonder if they're trying to tell us something without telling us anything...

  • Has the earth finally passed the teething point of fact over ignorance and superstition?   That is that other civilizations exist in a 14 billion light year universe and that this is now good knowledge to know?  I hope so.  The new generation of adults will welcome the news, not like previous generations who wanted to hide and live in dead and outdated ideas.
