The East Coast doesn't have the same building standards as the West Coast so that might account for more destruction from a lower magnitude earthquake.

Is it just me, or does that damage look a bit higher than a 6.0 that was one of the earlier figures before USGS "fixed" it - anyone else's guesses on how strong it really was, based on the damage? I know differences in rock cause variences in damage and how far away...but still......
