A suggestion has been made about blogs that just post links to news articles. It would be good to also post some commentary or analysis along with the link, such as perhaps how it relates to Planet X, or how you notice a trend is growing stronger.
Since I post so many newslink blogs, it starts with me. One reason I will post a newslink as a blog is to showcase a good picture. There's not much point in posting same old, same old pictures, like someone shoveling snow.
Another idea is for routine newslinks, like another winter storm or such, to be posted in the sidebar, perhaps "Daily Earthchange News" or something and leave the blogs and discussions open for other things. The downside to this idea is that no one could post a comment. Or, we could leave it to someone with a comment to turn it into a blog or discussion.
What do you all think?

Jason, I think blogs are more for commentary and the forum is more for discussion. However, I've used blogs to showcase newslinks with cool pictures as well as commentaries, like the ZetaTalk Analysis blogs.
Another idea we could do is use the Discussion forum to post newslinks (without pictures) and leave the blog section open for the newslinks with pictures, commentary and more visually oriented stuff since blog pictures show up on the front page but discussion pictures don't.
In case you haven't noticed blogs and discussions are different in the way the comments/replies operate. For instance, you can edit your discussion reply within 15 minutes of posting it. Your comment on blogs can't be edited. All you can do is copy and paste and repost (and delete the old comment).
