one of the big problems many of us may face very soon, if the prognostications the doomsayers are correct, is damage to local ecology including water supply by fallout from damaged nuclear power stations. I too live about twenty mile away from the Wylfa nuclear power station on Anglesey and if all hell and beyond breaks loose and there is leakage from the plant we may have problems with not only mains water but water in rivers and streams let alone ground water.

whilst this may seem an intractable problem it s not entirely the case as there are remedial measures one can take and I may explore these in greater depth later on. one method which was discovered in the nineteen fifties of purifying water is simply let it drain through a large volume of plain old garden soil. I would go for the darkest richest soil with at least a moderate amount  clay in it. simply fill a large container, I would go for a 100 liter water butt, fill it with soil, then any water say gathered fro a stream that we fear may have radiological contamination in it, simply allow the water tk drain through the soil, and collect it at the bottom. I believe there s a ninety percent filtration rate using this method.

then I would use either sand filter, using sand charcoal and maybe some gravel in layers, or simply filter it using a berkey water filter.  other area to explore are filtration using bentonite clay, and using charcoal absorption. it is a fruitful area for research, and can take a great deal of the fear out of life if we face a radio contamination problem in the future. another thought is ti collect water from the rain, from the roof of a house, I say this because, water in the ground may already have nucleotide in it, but th fresh rain may be relatively free. of course keep all water butts sealed from the elements. at all times.

I also want to say, in my own posts I may sound a  bit irascible at times, and I think  may have upset Alex Cortez, inadvertently, in my last post. If that is the case, I am deeply apologetic. we are all imperfect and have our own traits, and warts  and all. I am not immune from imperfections believe me, but I try  to put things right   afterwards.

  • Hey Nicholas, you might get mad at me. I do want to add to your post.

If we continue with your scenario, here is some precision I would like to make. Unless spent rods are stored in a cave above a source of ground water, the chance of contamination is very slim. Therefore ground water is safe to drink.

Rainwater is a good idea, but I only recommend using a roof made of untreated galvinized steel. Other roofing material contaminate the rainwater with chemicals. Do not collect the first hour of a rainfall. Collecting afterwards is OK. This should be followed by filtration.

You Idea of filter is excellent. What you are trying to achieve is a slow filtration. If you do not own a Berkley, a ceramic filter is very good because it is washable.

Surprisingly, radiation travel slowly in the ground, not more than 5 cm ( 2 in.) per years.

  • And I thought Obama was the greatest gift to us since Kennedy!!!!!  was I alone in this????  ah, sounds like a nice pot of tea is waiting. have a look though at the latest security drill on the river Thames, not seen it properly myself, all we need is someone to plant a bomb somewhere, and it is lockdown for us. as they say, in your country, it starts in Britain then migrates to the US. Listen also to Mike Harris on republican broadcasting, he has just started his shows, quite excellent, a great find. a true patriot in every sense, and thinks the way we do...

  • Duanne that sounds like congress

  • Nick  you bad boy you should have gone to bed without dinner, how dare you defile the laws of nature according to Rotchild. Do not worry my friend there are aliens flying around just waiting to save us from all the radiation.

  • tell Emmy, had my supper, dried bread and water, still looking for the flagella....now, where did I put it???

  • LOL funny man Nicholas

  • what have I said now??????  now I am really put in my place, maybe a spot of self flagellation? maybe no supper tonight?????

  • Emmy?

  •  prognostications the doomsayers

I am insulted by your comment. Pick up a physics book and learn a thing or two...

  • It will be very very interesting indeed, if they start building and decommissioning then the earhchanges kick in. if there is an axis tilt, we can expect the island let alone the mainland to be flooded out. submerged even . maybe a larger filter will be needed????? one thing there should be a lot of hot water about........
