some thoughts on protection against an erupting sun

it seems the time for preparations start today, after the video watched so far from the horizon project, seemingly reinforcing what Ed Dames and others have been saying, including John Dinardo. it is time we took seriously the threats from the great solar beast in the sky, after all the so called elite have made their own  plans and have their deep bunkers as protection. Also  we who have limited resources, and I include myself here, have far simpler yet equally effective solutions that can be implemented, once the sun erupts and we get blasted by its radiation.

so,  I assume we all live in a house or trailer or whatever, and it strikes me the simplest way to protect against the solar blast is to use aluminum foil. Whilst this is cheap it may not be wholly effective yet will go a long way and my proposal is to make screens foe each window that can easily be erected , placed over the windows and doors.

Here in the UK we can get hold of plaster boards with aluminum foil over them and they are used as insulation in studded walls for instance. Alternatively you can use frames made of two by two, and stretch the foil over them each one fitting a window. Use of a staple gun helps or we can use glue over the frame.

Another way may be to use a mirror over a main window or some sort of reflective shield, but the next few months and into 2013 will see just what is about to happen to us. i hope it is all a load of hype and life goes on in its merry way, but at least by simple and cheap means we will be better prepared, hopefully.

seriously, I think all these measures are best left on the drawing board, but I have an instinct to share ny ideas that others can use, if things got really bad we could make a safe room, use lead shielding against windows, it is quite feasable. The real concern Alex , is the ultraviolet C which is deadly. if the earths shields go down, the planet could be sterilized, that part facing the sun.  I doubt anyone has a solution to all this not even those in the DUMB's.

I agree with you, it is a beginning, not an end, I look forward to each day, am a total optimist. forgive the humor!!!!

Just wanted to let you know that I was not knocking your post in any way shape or form and personally I prefer to keep my head above ground regardless what may come.  The post does bring attention to a simple reality, that our greatest threat is not a rogue planet nor a giant asteroid, its simply our sun.....

 

At some point in our future it will engulf the earth....bringing about the finite end of this planet and all who reside on it.  This is not a maybe, this is a fact that will come to pass.  This year is not the year of endings though its the year of new beginnings so keep positive and stay in the light because the alternative just isn't worth it......

all I can suggest, Alex in thta case is get the old shovel out and start digging? I am quite happy to place a chair some twenty feet away from you and watch with a nice cup of tea in hand? or get that friendly old chap with a JCB , LOL!!!

in the end, we ere mortals will have ti be content to sit it out, none here have the golden ticket, the elite have to the underground bunkers. even so, better above ground, we may survive they may be buried alive... in the meantime, my suggestion is an amelioration of the effects of a solar eruption, to at least make an effort. most will have to stay in their homes , the only other way s to place thick lead shielding over windows and doors, which is a bit much for mots of us.

just my thoughts, I will certainly look into this if we do have a runaway sun. . I have a lot of concern and compassion for others which is why I made the posting, nothing more than that.

Ok, I will assume that by erupting you mean, solar flares and cme's.  Going with that assumption, the earth is fairly well protected by our magnetic field but as has been witnessed in the past, it can be breached. 

 

How do we protect against solar radiation which is truly the danger of these types of eruptions, alluminum foil may seem like a poorman's solution to this problem but it would take a bit more than just foil....to truly be protected we as a species would require a ditch or sub-ground level space that can be lined easily with some form of lead sheeting.  The top of this space would need a bare minimum of 36" of dirt or 6-12" of cement to offer any significant amount of protection against a solar blast, remember we are not talking about just light and magnetic fields here we are discussing actually radiation that can easily get through most substances.....

 

A good method of knowing if you are shielded is by simply using your cell phone.  If you have no bars, period in an inclosed space then there is a good chance you have some shielding but to truly protect you have to be below ground of truly shielded by lead walls....
