In addition to floodwaters, Army Corps of Engineers' officials are battling another foe these days--complacency.

Not since waters punched a hole in the levee near Percival June 30th has there been a significant levee breach in KMAland. That doesn't mean residents should breathe easier about the area's flooding situation. Ted Streckfuss, deputy district engineer for the Corps' Kansas City office, tells KMA News now is not the time to be complacent about levee conditions.

"The Missouri River's levees have had a lot of water on them for quite some periods of time," says Streckfuss. "Do recognize that levees only reduce flooding."

In fact, Streckfuss says levees may be tested again in the coming weeks. Rainfall from South Dakota and Northern Iowa is filtering into the Big Sioux and Little Sioux Rivers. That water is expected to flow down the Missouri River to Omaha, increasing water levels at certain stations. He expects levels at Plattsmouth, for example, to rise to previous high levels by this weekend.

Warnings concerning complacency extend to area motorists. Rick Bennett of the Missouri Department of Transportation says motorists should be remain vigilant regarding flooded roads.

"We want to remind all drivers not to drive across flooded roads," says Bennett. "Don't drive across barricades and traffic control. Be safe and watch for water over the road."

Bennett says 52 road closures remain in effect in the state of Missouri alone
