"The radioactive isotopes recorded at the three above-mentioned locations are at low level, and do not pose a threat to human health and the environment," scientists said.

CY: Minutes ago, I was listening to the radio. They
were talking about feeding and shelters set up, and
the national guard protecting a town. I had to do
some news searching. From what I can gather,
Iowa had a tornado, and the government is
responding in heavy handed dictatorial fashion.

"We're going door by door to make sure everybody's
out," Joe Rodriguez, of Sioux City's Urban Search
and Rescue Task Force, told KCAU-TV.

Tornado batters Mapleton; as much as 60 percent
    of town damaged or destroyed
    11:25 PM, Apr 9, 2011 | by Daniel Finney |

A tornado hit Mapleton hard Saturday night,
damaging or destroying as much as 60 percent
of the western Iowa town of 1,200. Gov. Terry
Branstad quickly declared Monona County a
disaster area after the tornado tore through the
    community at about 7:20 p.m..

As much as 50 to 60 percent of Mapleton was
either damaged or destroyed, the Sioux City
    Journal reported Saturday.

Officials set up a shelter for 200 people in the
town's community center. Roads leading into
Mapleton were closed, and access to the town
    was restricted.

State and county disaster officials from neighboring
counties were converging on the community late
    Saturday night.

Uhl worked at the Mapleton Community Center
Saturday night. She described the damage as
extensive, saying that the town was without power.

Uhl said that the American Red Cross was bringing
cots to the community center for displaced families.
The community center can accommodate about
200 people for normal events, but Uhl was unsure
how many cots the facility could hold.

Mapleton officials are also opening city hall for
    victims to spend the night.

Uhl was attending a school play when the tornado
struck. Attendees were evacuated to the locker
rooms, where the power was out. "It was a fright-
    ening experience.

Despite the devastation, Uhl said that people have
    remained calm in the aftermath.

"People have passed in and out. Nobody is settling
in for the night yet. There is definitely shock, but
    people have been overwhelmingly supportive,"
    Uhl said.

the tornado appeared to be about a quarter-mile
wide. Several downtown buildings were destroyed,
a grain elevator was knocked down, the roof was
blown off the high school and power lines were
    down throughout the town.
