  • The Sun's dipolar field is about as strong as a refrigerator magnet, or 50 gauss (a unit of magnetic intensity). Earth's magnetic field is 100 times weaker.  We are overdue for a magnetic flip of our field.  Considering that we are in a solar maximum it is strange but not unheard of.  Not really sure if a weakening can cause a shift of the field but others here may have a clue.
  • A drop in the suns magnetic field means less power to the earths magnetic field.  If our magnetic field drops in strength does this mean that the earths field can drop enough to flip?
  • This sounds like a surprise.
  • Had a Global Rumblings correspondent email me article about this today!

  • I received an article in a RSS Feed today on the same subject, from an astronomy professor.

    Is the Sunspot...

Must be big news --- "This is highly unusual and unexpected,” Dr. Frank Hill from the article you posted.
