It's called Zohydro.
Clinical Psychiatry News (3/13) has the story. West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin is protesting FDA approval of the drug. He's written a stunning letter to US Health and Human Services head, Kathleen Sebelius.
"...Sen. Manchin noted that the FDA approved the drug 'despite strong opposition from its own Anesthetic and Analgesic Drug Products Advisory Committee.'"
This is highly significant. The FDA turned its back on its own panel of new-drug reviewers.
Senator Manchin continues:
"Simply put, the FDA's approval of Zohydro ER, in its current form, must be stopped before this dangerous drug is sold to the public... [Zohydro] has up to 10 times as much hydrocodone as Vicodin and Lortab and will come in a formulation that can be easily crushed, snorted, and injected."
In other words, Zohydro, used as a pain killer, is a nightmare. If you've ever taken Vicodin, imagine a pill with ten times the strength.
"In his letter, Manchin raised questions about the drug's approval. 'I am deeply troubled that the reason for Zohydro ER's approval may be linked to allegations that the FDA gave manufacturers of prescription drugs the opportunity to pay thousands of dollars for the privilege to attend private meetings with FDA officials,' he wrote, citing news reports. 'Allegations have been raised that a new, scientifically questionable methodology for drug approval was created at these pay-to-play meetings.'"
"The FDA has denied any improprieties regarding those private meetings, which the agency has said were intended to help the FDA better evaluate evidence from clinical trials."
Then let's see every word of those private meetings. The FDA is a public agency. Let's see exactly what went on in those secret meetings.
For background: On July 20, 2012, Martha Rosenberg interviewed a former FDA drug reviewer, Ronald Kavanagh, for Truthout. The subject was FDA retaliation against its own people who didn't follow orders on approving new drugs, but instead relied on evidence.
Kavanagh: "...widespread [FDA] racketeering, including witness tampering and witness retaliation."
"I was threatened with prison."
"One [FDA] manager threatened my children...I was afraid that I could be killed for talking to Congress and criminal investigators."
Kavanagh reviewed new drug applications made to the FDA by pharmaceutical companies. He was one of the holdouts at the Agency who insisted that the drugs had to be safe and effective before being released to the public.
But honest appraisal wasn't part of the FDA culture, and Kavanagh swam against the tide, until he realized his life and the life of his children was on the line.
What was his secret task at the FDA? "Drug reviewers were clearly told not to question drug companies and that our job was to approve drugs." In other words, rubber stamp them. Say the drugs were safe and effective when they were not.
Kavanagh's revelations are astonishing. He recalls a meeting where a drug-company representative flat-out stated that his company had paid the FDA for a new-drug approval. Paid for it. As in bribe.
He remarks that the drug pyridostigmine, given to US troops to prevent the later effects of nerve gas, "actually increased the lethality" of certain nerve agents.
Kavanagh recalls being given records of safety data on a drug---and then his bosses told him which sections not to read. Obviously, they knew the drug was dangerous and they knew exactly where, in the reports, that fact would be revealed.
We are not dealing with isolated incidents of cheating and lying. We are not dealing with a few isolated bought-off FDA employees. The situation at the FDA isn't correctable with a few firings. This is an ongoing criminal enterprise, and any government official, serving in any capacity, who has become aware of it and has not taken action, is an accessory to mass poisoning of the population.
Fourteen years ago, the cat was let out of the bag. Dr. Barbara Starfield, writing in the Journal of the American Medical Association, on July 26, 2000, in a review titled, "Is US health really the best in the world," exposed the fact that FDA-approved medical drugs kill 106,000 Americans per year.
In interviewing her, I discovered that she had never been approached by any federal agency to help remedy this tragedy. Nor had the federal government taken any steps on its own to stop the dying.
And now we have Zohydro, a new drug ready to hit the streets. You'll know it when you see more zombies walking.
Senator Manchin has just introduced a bill to slap down the FDA approval of Zohydro.
Here are official black-box warnings contained in Zohydro packaging:
Long-acting hydrocodone exposes patients and other users to the risks of opioid addiction, abuse, and misuse, which can lead to overdose and death.
Serious, life-threatening, or fatal respiratory depression may occur.
Instruct patients to swallow Zohydro ER capsules whole; crushing, chewing, or dissolving capsules can cause rapid release and absorption of a potentially fatal dose of hydrocodone.
Accidental consumption of even 1 dose of hydrocodone, especially by children, can result in a fatal overdose of hydrocodone.
For patients who require opioid therapy while pregnant, be aware that infants may require treatment for neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome.
Prolonged maternal use during pregnancy can result in neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, which may be life-threatening and requires management according to protocols developed by neonatology experts.

Beings believed in living for today.
We all are in danger when all have lost compassion for life and living – from the forests to oceans which are stripped and poisoned. Greed controls all. "I don't think anyone would ever do something like this on purpose," hatchery owner Doug Holt said. He suspects manure runoff from one of several farms in the Newville area may have seeped into the underground spring that supplies his water. Complicating the issue, he said, is the high amount of limestone in that part of Cumberland County. "Somebody found a sinkhole with their manure and I don't how much of it had to run in for this to happen, but you know, it's unfortunate." He's now borrowed about 20 aerators to continually pump water into troughs for his surviving fish, which are swimming in murky water that is normally crystal clear. "They're actually picking the water up and splashing it back onto the surface of the raceway to add oxygen to increase oxygen levels in the water to keep the fish alive," he said. The Pa. Department of Environmental Protection is investigating and has run field tests at the North Newton Township farm twice so far. A spokesperson told abc27 they have discovered a definite contamination, but have not yet pin-pointed the source. Holt said a Shippensburg University professor's tests have already returned a positive result for bacteria found in manure, which makes sense since farmers usually begin spreading in the beginning of March. Holt said the loss of the fish has already cost him about $20,000, plus fuel and electricity bills are in the hundreds each day. He said he hopes to soon see an end in sight. "If we can't supply the fish when people want them, they're going to go elsewhere and we lose the business anyway," he said. "So it's kind of a compounded issue." The cause of a major fish kill at a private Newville-area trout hatchery is proving to be elusive, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Environmental Protection said Monday.
Lisa Kasianowitz said experts from DEP and the Cumberland County Conservation District have twice investigated the problem reported this month by Green Spring Trout Farms.
Both investigations on March 2 and Sunday showed lethally low dissolve oxygen levels in the spring that feeds the hatchery, but it could not be determined what caused the dearth of oxygen that was asphyxiating droves of fish, she said.
"No immediate source of the contamination was identified," Kasianowitz said in an e-mail.

| Hundreds of dead frogs have been reportedly found in a lake in the Curragh (County Kildare, Leinster Province). Water samples were collected yesterday - 25 Feb 2014 - after an estimated 250 to 300 dead or dying frogs were found in the area, writes Paula Campbell. An overnight analysis of the water sampled by the Herpetological Society of Ireland returned results that are within the normal range for a healthy habitat however. The primary clinical signs of the frogs discovered were dry, crackly skin around the neck area. There was also red discolouration in the skin of some of the frogs, known as common frogs, in what has been described as a 'mass die off' of the frogs in the lake. There are a number of possible causes of this huge frog die-off including being a target for rats during the spawning seasons as they become an easy target because they are worn out after all the frog reproduction. The Ranavirus, which causes internal haemorrhaging could also be a cause, alongside chytrid, a pathogenic water fungus which invades the immune system, giving the animals a crusty appearance. Skin swabs have been taken for DNA analysis in an effort to identify the root cause of this mass mortality occurrence. | |

Mass die off of Frogs in the Curragh
Hundreds of dead frogs have been reportedly found in a lake in the Curragh.
Water samples were collected yesterday after an estimated 250 to 300 dead or dying frogs were found in the area writes Paula Campbell.
An overnight analysis of the water sampled by the Herpetological Society of Ireland returned results that are within the normal range for a healthy habitat however.
The primary symptoms of the frogs discovered were dry, crackly skin around the neck area. There was also red discolouration in the skin of some of the frogs, known as common frogs, in what has been described as a ‘mass die off’ of the frogs in the lake.

A LAKE IN The Curragh, Kildare, has been tested this morning after hundreds of frog corpses were found around it.
The Herpetological Society of Ireland collected samples from the frogs and the water this morning to send for analysis after obtaining an emergency licence from the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) last night. There were between 250 and 300 dead frogs discovered.
Speaking to TheJournal.ie today, Rob Gandola, a member of the society, said there are a number of possible causes of this huge frog die-off:
Predators. Sometimes frogs are targeted during spawning season by animals such as rats because they are a bit distracted by the task in hand and are then easy targets because the are worn out after all the frog love-making.
- The Ranavirus, which causes internal haemorrhaging. Gandola said it is “particularly nasty” to amphibians and can be difficult to detect.
- Chytrid, a pathogenic water fungus which invades the immune system, giving the animals a crusty appearance.

| New eruptions were observed at Java's second highest volcano since yesterday evening. A series of explosions produced ash plumes rising 800-1000 m above the summit, the local observatory reported. This activity came after a steep increase in volcanic earthquakes from averages of approx 50 to more than 200 per day, volcanologist Mr Sudrajat from the local observatory told the press. The first explosion occurred Monday evening at 20:06, causing the glass windows of the observatory building to vibrate. Shortly after, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) raised the status of Mount Slamet from normal to alert (2 on a scale of 1-4). According to local press, the vibration from the eruption could be felt in up to 10 km distance and described the plume as "thick smoke". Slamet is one of Java's most active volcanoes and often has strombolian to vulcanian-type activity in its summit crater. |

Volcano Hiking Routes Closed as Mount Slamet Put on Alert in Central Java
Jakarta/Purbalingga. Indonesia’s geological agency sounded an alert for the Central Java volcano Mount Slamet on Tuesday, advising hikers to avoid the crater rim but falling short of instructing local communities to evacuate.
“It started on Monday evening at 9 p.m,” said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, head of the National Disaster Response Agency (BNPB), in a text message sent on Tuesday.
The Center of Volcanic and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) raised the status of Mount Slamet in Central Java activity to the second level of alert: waspada.
Sutopo said volcanic activity was a potential risk for five sub-districts located around Mount Slamet: Banyumas, Brebes, Pembalang, Purbalingga and Tegal.
The PVMBG has recorded 441 minor quakes and 9 shallow volcanic quakes since March 8.
“We suggest residents stay calm and not panic,” Sutopo said. ”We also recommend tourists, hikers and residents do not to hike the mountain or do anything within the two-kilometer radius of Mount Slamet’s crater.”
The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has not warned residents directly.
“We have not officially warned the people living in around Mount Slamet, especially the ones in Purbalingga sub-district, like Kutabawa village, Karangreja ward, and others,” Purbalingga BPBD chief Priyo Satmoko said on Tueday.

Consumer Groups Sue FDA Over Mercury in Seafood

Earthjustice, along with Center for Science in the Public Interest and the Mercury Policy Project, are suing the FDA for “failing to respond to a July 2011 petition in which the groups asked the FDA to give consumers clear, accurate, and accessible information about toxic mercury in the seafood they eat.” At this time, the latest recommendations for pregnant women eating shellfish are to avoid certain species, and eat up to 12 ounces a week of other fish. Those recommendations were set in 2004.
The lawsuit asks for a court-ordered deadline for the FDA to respond to its request that signs be required at seafood counters and on seafood labels to let consumers know how much mercury is in the fish they buy. The FDA had 180 days, three years ago, to respond to the petition, but did not.
Mercury content in seafood is a concern and has been for years. Airborne mercury comes from coal-fired power plants and gold mining. It falls into the ocean, where it is converted into methyl mercury, which is a neurotoxin. That concentrates in fish and shellfish. Methylmercury exposure is linked to lowered IQ, learning disabilities, and impaired cognitive functioning.

Activists sue FDA over mercury disclosures in seafood
Consumer protection and environmental advocacy groups filed al lawsuit Monday, accusing the Food and Drug Administration of failing to act in response to calls for more public information about mercury levels in seafood.
The legal action follows a petition filed by the group Earthjustice three years ago, urging the FDA to require signs at supermarket seafood counters to telling shoppers about the amounts of mercury in fish.
The petition, filed on behalf of the Center for Science in the Public Interest and the Mercury Policy Project, also calls for labels on packaged seafood.
The groups say FDA officials had, under the agency’s own rules, 180 days to respond to the petition but ignored the deadline in violation of federal law.

This family of influenza viruses belong to the Orthomyxoviruses. They all range in severity, but cause respiratory infection in the host animals.
Several subtypes of the influenza A virus exist. This virus is more commonly known as the "bird flu" in that it infects mostly avian species, although some have been found in mammals, as well. These viruses range in the level of pathogenicity. H5N8 is one of the many subtypes. One of the main reasons for concern is these viruses undergo constant change, which makes vaccine manufacturing almost impossible. By the time a vaccine is distributed, the virus may have already mutated. Although H5N8 is considered one of the lower pathenogenic subtypes, it is beginning to become more so. Many times, H5N8 is used as an incubator for the highly pathogenic H1N1. [1]

| South Korea banned the movement of people who work with poultry and products from two provinces after confirming an outbreak of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N8 at a farm in the country's south. Authorities have restricted movement in North Jeolla province, South Jeolla province and Gwangju Metropolitan City, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) from Seoul, for 48 hours until midnight Jan. 20, Lee Dong Phil, minister of the agriculture, food and rural affairs, told reporters today. The ministry confirmed the first outbreak in Gochang, North Jeolla province on Jan. 17, and suspects two more cases at duck farms in nearby Buan County, according to separate statements on the ministry's website. As many as 21,000 ducks have been culled at the farm in Gochang. "It was inevitable to announce a stand-still in order to prevent further damage," Lee said. "We ask all to comply thoroughly with the stand-still instructions." South Korea is the world's third-biggest buyer of corn, used in food, livestock feed and biofuel. | Two new suspected bird flu cases have been reported this week, the government said Monday, as quarantine authorities stay on watch for any new signs after heavy traffic of people during the Lunar New Year holiday. The additional cases were reported Sunday at a duck farm in Eumseong, North Chungcheong Province, and a chicken farm in Jeongeup, North Jeolla Province, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. With the two newest additions, the total number of suspected cases of avian influenza (AI) reported so far is 77. An H5N8 strain of bird flu has been confirmed in 40 cases, up from 27 on Saturday. Ministry officials said the new suspected cases did not mean the animal disease was continuing to spread. The two new cases were from areas that are already under close government control, they said. "The government believes the disease is mostly being reported in areas controlled by the government. We are seeing sporadic outbreaks, but the disease is well under control," Kwon Jae-han, the head of the ministry's livestock policy bureau, told a press briefing. New Bird Flu Outbreak in Korea; 500,000 Chickens Culled
A new case of H5N8 bird flu in Korea has led to the culling of 50,000 chickens, according to The Chosun Ilbo. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs confirmed the case on Sunday, March 9, 2014. Now only Gangwon and Jeju provinces do not have birds with the virus. No human infections have been reported to date.
A farm in Gyeongju bought 6,700 chickens from a farm in Pyeongtaek, in Gyeonggi Province. The new bird flu strain was detected there on March 4, 2014. The virus was found in bird droppings on the farm. Authorities are culling 500,000 chickens in the area. Lab tests are ongoing to determine if the virus is highly transmissible.
The new bird flu strain was detected in Korea on January 16, 2014. Since then, more than 2.8 million birds have been killed.

A dangerous new strain of bird flu that emerged in South Korea on 17 January has spread nationwide despite efforts to clamp down on the virus. Authorities have culled 2.8 million domestic chickens and ducks since the outbreak began, and the strain has also killed dozens of Baikal teal and other migratory birds. As yet, there are no reports of human infections. Scientists are puzzling over where the H5N8 strain, never before seen in a highly pathogenic form, originated. And researchers are scrambling to keep the virus out of the country's premier poultry research center.
Intensive surveillance of commercial poultry and wild birds had never before detected the H5N8 strain in Korea, says Jae-Hong Kim, a veterinary microbiologist at Seoul National University. Last year, a Chinese group reported having isolated it from apparently healthy ducks at a live poultry market in China. Based on H5N8’s sudden appearance in Korea and the genetic similarity of isolates from poultry and migratory birds, a governmental investigative committee has "tentatively concluded that [the virus] was likely to have been introduced by migratory birds," Kim says.

You can’t live without this vitamin. But the FDA wants to reserve the natural form for monopoly drug companies, leaving only the synthetic form for supplements. Urgent Action Alert!
The FDA has just released a new 109-page guidance on the revision of nutrition and supplement labels. (You can read more about the implications of the new labeling rules in our other article this week.)
On page 69, the agency slipped in two little paragraphs that could risk the health of millions of people who desperately need folate. It’s a sneak attack so quiet and unobtrusive that few people will even realize it’s there.
According to the guidance, the word “folate” will be banned from the Supplement Fact labels—only the term “folic acid” will be allowed.
Folate is the naturally occurring form of the water-soluble vitamin B9. It is found in foods such as black-eyed peas, chickpeas and other beans, lentils, spinach, turnip greens, asparagus, avocado, and broccoli, but is also available as a supplement.
The human body needs folate to synthesize and repair its DNA. It’s especially important during the kind of rapid cell division and growth seen in infancy and pregnancy. Children and adults both require folate to produce healthy red blood cells and prevent anemia among many other vital functions.
Folic acid, on the other hand, is synthetically produced, and refers to just one member of the folate group: pteroylmonoglutamic acid. While folic acid occurs only rarely in whole foods, it’s extremely stable, which is why it’s widely used in dietary supplements and to fortify processed foods.
The important thing to remember is that folic acid is not itself biologically active, though for most people the liver can convert it to the folate we need. Most, however, does not mean all. It’s estimated that 30% to 40% of the population can’t efficiently convert synthetic folic acid into folate.
In other words, about a third of the human population has two potential problems: a deficiency in folate (because it is hard to get enough from a diet full of processed foods), and possibly even an excess of folic acid (because their body can’t metabolize what could become an overabundance of folic acid present in “fortified” foods):
- According to Dr. Jonathan V. Wright, folate deficiency is one of the most dangerous medical conditions, leading to Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases. If pregnant women are deficient in it, it can also lead to spina bifida and other neural tube birth defects in their children.
- On the other hand, too much unmetabolized folic acid can build up in the blood, which could lead to an increased risk of prostate, lung, and colon cancer, or worsen already present cancerous lesions. This refers to large amounts of folic acid, larger than in current supplements, but more research is needed to account for individual differences.
Note that the FDA is not exactly banning the inclusion of folate and requiring the inclusion of folic acid in supplements. As usual, it is playing a much more subtle insider’s game. It is simply banning supplement producers from using the word folate on their labels and conversely only allowing the word folic acid on their labels. But it would of course be fraudulent to put folic acid on your label and then use something else. The FDA understands that perfectly.
So on what grounds is the agency banning the use of the word folate on the label? Believe it or not, it is arguing that folate can only be found in “conventional” (whole or minimally processed) foods.
Before we examine this absurd claim, we must first explain that limiting a folate claim to food would not prevent drug companies from becoming the only source of folate outside of food. Drug companies don’t care what a chemical is called so long as they can create a high priced monopoly in it. Ironically, the FDA’s position that folate can only be used to describe what is in food would still turn folate over to the drug companies—so long as supplement labels can only use the term folic acid.
So what about the agency’s assertion that “folate” can only be found in food? “Folate” is actually a term for a whole B vitamin group. The term “folate” we see on dietary supplement labels refers to “dietary folates,” members of the folate group that can be naturally found in foods. Folinic acid (5-FTHF), calcium methylfolate, and various other tetrahydrofolates can be found in dietary supplements. Many brands feature dietary folate.[1] It would be completely inaccurate and misleading to refer to these dietary folates as “folic acid.” Legally, it would be fraudulent.
Why did the FDA do this? One can only guess. But it would not be surprising if it eventually turns out to be a blatant attempt to reserve for drug companies the use of dietary folates. After all, B vitamins are not only essential for life. They are also proven therapeutic agents. Drug company research programs have been coming up short for years; new drug therapeutic agents are in very short supply.
Moreover, the drug company Merck already holds patents on Metafolin, which the body recognizes as a bioavailable dietary folate. Metafolin is licensed by dietary supplement companies for some of their products.
If, according to FDA “logic,” dietary supplements can’t contain folate like Metafolin, it would only be available from whole foods…or drugs, and only from drugs in higher doses. Since Merck would have exclusivity for a Metafolin “drug,” our guess is that they would make billions. And other forms of patentable folate could then follow.
Sound unlikely? It’s not—both forms of fish oil and vitamin D have already been turned into patented drugs. Imagine if competition from supplemental forms of fish oil or D could be wiped out at one stroke by saying no supplement label could use the term!
