My Siberian Huskey Asher likes to take a treat outside with him.  This morning I watched him take his beefhide bone into the back yard.  He also likes to burry them, but I discurage that.   Since my back yard grass is in bad shape due to the drought this summer I decided to let him have some fun.  He found a spot near the fence and10958024292?profile=original10958025290?profile=original planted it about four inches down.  Then he came in and got another one to take outside.  This time he just put it under some leaves.  As I watched him haveing fun it hit me, he is saving food.   My dog is a Prepper!

  • Rosemary, sometimes it is hard to understand what Asher is sayin, but most of the time He comes through loude and clear!  Thanks Rosemary!

Mariana, Dialila is a beautiful dog!  He looks so special!

  • My sister's Dalila:

  • We have a cat that is quite shy around people. She is now 13. Once I was really sick with the flue. She became my nurse and sat on my shoulder and purred like made the whole time I had a fever. I sure all of you can understand what your dogs or cats tell you. Mine scolds me once in a while when I am too slow to respond. Because she is not a dominant cat, she has been attack by other cats in the neighbourhood. We use to have rabbits, but had to get rid of them because of the neighbours. I miss them.

Jim, your dog is simply beautiful.

  • Mariana, I forgot to mention, when I said that snow dogs are special and need a lot of attention, and that you should read up about them before buying one, I was talking in general to anyone who wants a snow dog.  There are actualy a lot of breaders who will not sell a Huskeu or Malamute to some one who has not owned one previously.  So many people want them just because they are so beautiful.

  • Mariana, I agree with you and I also love all animals, even roaches!  I got Asher at the local dog pound.  His previous owners did not know how to get along with him.  They also had two other dogs that were not snow dogs. Asher was kepted in a small cage cause the other dogs did not get along with him.  Truth is Asher just plays rough , all snow dogs do.  He also had extream diarea.  So extream that I could not bring him home for elevin days while he was in quarintene and while they tried to fix the problem, which they could not.  They finaly told me that he was ok to take home but he still had the GI's which lasted for another two weeks.  They all fed him dog food which was the problem.  Huskeys were bread to eat fish, caraboo, slop, etc.  Asher was alergic to dog food.   I feed him people food.  My vet said his stomich was so small that it seemed like he had no stomic at all.  I had to take him to the emergency vet cause something got in my fenced yard and bit him.  His x-rays showed that his front leg was out of line.  He must have been hit by a car.   I was luckey to find a pure bread Siberian Huskey at the shelter.  My first Huskey Littlebear had to be put to sleep, he fell down and could not walk.  The vet said he would never walk again.  He died on 1-11-11.  I missed him and could not live without another snow dog.   Little bear was 13.  2967660081?profile=originalSo while I help Asher, Asher also helps me! Here is a photo of him at the pound where you can see how skinney he was.

  • Jim, I love all animals, cats, dogs, horses, rabbits, donkeys, goats, etc. (exept for roaches and a few more insects).

About Huskeys, don't worry, unless I moove to Alaska or Canada, I will never adopt one, no matter how beautiful and lovely they are, because I belive that raising one in the hot Israeli weather is allmost cruel.  Even my sister's Dalila, who is only halve Huskey, suffers greatly from the heat.

Besides, I preffer adopting the "underdogs" at public kennels, who are not pure breeds and mostly with some sort of disability (like our diseased red haired cat, Moshe, who had only one eye when he adopted us or our Nani who is lame in a hind leg) or "defected" pure breeds that are thrown away by breeders because they can't earn mony for them in competitions or by selling their pups, (like Lassie, a German Shepperd I had when I was a child that was the daughter of two champions with a dinasty longer than that of the queen of England, but had 6 toes in each leg, or Jose, a Cokker Spaniel that was not "competition stuff" because he had splotches of collor instead of defined spots).

I'm not telling that raising pure breeds is a bad thing!! Someone has to do it so the very numerous and beautiful different rases of cats, dogs and other domestic animals are preserved, I'm saying that "imperfect" pets, are perfect for me and my family. They can love you as much as any other pet, sometimes I think they are even more thankful for being chosen.

  • Mariana, my now-deceased cat, Maui, used to lay on the arm of my La-Z-Boy recliner and sleep with her head on my keyboard.  She liked the fan and warm air from my laptop.

  • You are very welcome Weiynala!  I think your cats want to play outside!  Yes thank God for our little friends!  Notice I said the "light" side?  I was thinking how they brighten our day.  And how this might brighten everyone here day.  Ide like to see more pictures of our dogs/cats.  Seems so far that there are a lot of cat people here.

There is another thing to think about.  After the SHTF, make sure that there is plenty of food that your little friends likes to eat.

  • Mariana, sure sounds like you love your cats and they love you!  I have never heard of a trash can tabby.  My sister just put one of her cats to sleep that was 22 years old.  So you will be having your pals for a long time.

The one thing that people do not know about Huskeys is that they are not like other dogs.   They are powerfull and full of energy.  Sort of like having a 2 year old.  So don't get one unless you read and learn about them first.  You will need to give them a lot of love.  They are very demanding and are high maintance.  My dog has me well trained!  And I listen to him when he talks!  But once you have their support and they decide they want you for their pal, they are very loyal.  When I first got Asher, if the door was cracked open he was out like a flash. The are runners.  But now that he decided to be my pal I can open the door wide open and he will stay untill I tell him to go.  He also stays in the van when I open the back hatch.  And like they say, "A dog is mans best friend!"

  • Jim, what an amazing dog!!  My sister has a half breed (huskey and  borzoi), Dalila is her name, and she has this royalty look on her, without being a snob.

JAK, your dog is amazing too, he looks very relaxed and happy in this photo.  My father in law says that when a dog sleeps relaxed is because he feels safe and at home.

I love animals, we have 2 dogs and a cat now, and if we could we would have more.  Actually, until last January we had one more cat, a red haired of the very famous "trash can" race, but we lost him due to old age, (he was 16).

The senior of the three pets we have now, both in age and rank between them, is Nani, a mix between a puddle and a mop.  We adopted her from a kennel 11 years ago when she was 2 y/o.  She was probably abused before that, because she cowered when we reached out to pat her.  With time she got used to being treated well and to be pampered.  Now she actually dears to demand attention by putting a leg on our leg to show she wants to be patted.

Then came Toolah, our spoiled rotten tricolor "trash can" tabby cat.  She is the most patient, loving, sweet cat ever.  She is my island of calmness, and actually, when I get mad at my kids and start racing my voice, she runs to me and, if I'm sitting, she sits on my chest and starts rubbing her nose on my face as telling me to calm down and if I stand, she stands on her hind legs leaning on me and meows until I pick her up and calm down.

Here I was writing in my diary and having my morning mate (a South American traditional tea) and she desided my diary looked very comftable.

Our las addition is Layla, I brought her 6 years ago as a present for my son's 7th birthday.  He named her Layla after Erik Clapton's song, one of his favorites.  I got her at a kennel that sptialices in pedigree Shar Pey dogs, but her momma desided to "have some fun" with a less "distinguished" dog, so Layla is halve Shar Pey, halve Australian Shepperd dog, and I got her for free.  From her father she probably inherited her colour:  white with a black mask arround her ears and eyes, a black circle arround her tale and black splotches on her body, and from her mother she inherited the kute nossle, the rolling up tale and enough skin folds to be beautiful without the skin and eyes problems of the Shar pays.  She is the fanniest thing, allways doing something to make us laugh, and she is very protective of the fammily, and big enough to scare away burglars and nasty creatures like that.

Besides all three of them, we have a family of porcupines that desided to make their home in our backyard, we don't bother them and keep the dogs away so they won't bother eather, and they give us a big servise by eating bugs and snails that feed on our plants.
