  • I agree with DR.  If a people wants to continue with their heritage undisturbed, then they should vote no.  And aligning with the U.S. as it is on its way down is definitely another consideration.
  • Very good points Desertrose

But US track record is not good and becoming a state could as you said destroy their culture

Let the people of Puerto Rico vote

Alex all your posts, comments and opinions are ok with me even if they are opposite mine

  • Lol,  if it is  something that  is  important  to  you  and  you  feel  you  would like  feedback ,  I  don't  see why  posting it  here  should be a problem, Alex.

As a descendent of the Taino as  well as  being  of  Cuban descent I would  say  that  part of me says , No.  The  need  to  keep  and allow the people to  stay  true to their  culture  without  interruption  or  interference is very  important to  many.  The  political  and  bureaucratic  views on the  Island  are  very  different  from  mainstream USA.  Just  as it is on  many  of the  Caribbean  Islands.  View  points  are  different,  culture  and  ways of  life  are  extremely   different.  Although  PR  has  been  a  commonwealth  for a  very  long  time   and I  have  not been on  the  Island  for  many years.  I  do  still have  family  there.  I  am  not  privy  to  the  governmental  structure there .  I am, however,  privy  to the  lifestyle and  views.  Very  much  Caribbean with  much  indigenous  tradition woven into daily  life,  from  my understanding.  A  fiercely  independent  People with  great  pride in their  Ancestry and  their  Culture.

I  would venture  to  look at  PR  just as  one  would look  to  Hawaii.  How  has  it  fared from the  benefits of being a State?  Their Culture still  preserved ( to a  certain degree) , however in many  ways  a  diluted  form of it's  former self  as they  now live in two  worlds.  Indigenous and  American.  Their  health has  suffered  as  their indigenous  traditions  and  nutritional ways have  been  changed to incorporate  more  American nutrition or lack  thereof  depending on how  you  look at  it.

Many  feel  that  to  give  up their  independence is to  change who they  are  and  forfeit  their ways as  a people  and  as  a Nation.  My thinking  is  Indigenous so I  am  biased.  With  all the difficulty the  US  is having  at the  moment  with their own government and the running thereof.  Personally,  I   will say that  I  believe  the  people of  PR are  better off  Independent than  dependent.  That  may  be  wrong ,  however  it is how I  feel.  If  you know  what I  mean.

    Just  my  two cents ....................
