Earthquake In Southwest Virginia

We had a small earthquake a few minutes ago, 40 miles southwest of Roanoke.  I was turning on the washer and it started jiggling.  For a moment I thought I had accidentally turned it to agitate (can't do that, it's not a setting) then I realized it was an earthquake.

We never have earthquakes here.  Got preps?

  • His name is Doug Copp.  Everyone, search his name and read what he has to say about earthquake safety.
  • If you can't make it out of your house, remember [insert member name]'s advice about the triangle.... I'm doubting one will hit here, but I still have mental triangle preps in mind if one does...
  • I was at work and the entire building shook for a good 15-20 seconds, if not longer.  Everyone seemed to be in shock.  This should serve as a lesson for people.  What happens if you're away from home and don't have any bug out supplies, if your family members are somewhere else, etc. It's good to come up with a plan now while we're still able.
  • Thanks, Cheryl!  In hindsight, I was wondering why my dog was acting weird since this morning and also was noticing strange behavior with the birds since yesterday.  Stay safe.
  • Thanks, Shadow.  Good to keep a sense of humor!  :-)
  • Congratulations.  Good to get used to them before the really big ones come.  To me, up in the mountains, it felt like the washing machine agitating.
  • We've hit a milestone, Kim, our very first earthquake!
  • Btw this was my first
  • If felt smaller than it was.  The mountains buffered it.  But I made everyone run outside anyway.  You have to evacuate immediately.  If you pause and it is the beginning of a big one, you might not make it out of your house.
  • wonder how many aftershocks
