DAYTON — The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a 4.2 magnitude earthquake Thursday near Kokomo, Ind.
The earthquake, which was five miles southeast of Greentown, Ind., occurred about 7:55 a.m.
Some Miami Valley residents in the counties of Montgomery, Greene, Miami, Warren and Darke have reported that they felt the ground shake Thursday morning.
“(It) shook our house just before 8 a.m.,” said Carol Odgers of Bellbrook via e-mail. “ Chandeliers and lampshades wobbled. “It was over before I could get to a doorway (about 3 seconds), but also caused a rift of snow to fall from the roof.”

Another tip is to go for the triangle, lots of the people that have survived these horrendous building collapses survived because they were in a triangle. For example, the triangle of a corner in the room, or near a larger pc of furniture and the floor.
Rosemary, the Portland quake is interesting, and we've wondered here if they may be related.
I learned this the hard way...do not stand in doorways. They do not protect you. From what I read, that piece of information came out of the adobe days, where the doorway was the only thing left standing.
I tried applying that advice in the Northridge earthquake and was thrown and suffered a concussion and a broken ankle. You cannot stand during a large earthquake. Best thing to do is to lay down and curl up next to a sofa or bed, pull pillows or matresses over you to protect from falling objects.
One of the rpatterns I've noticed for some time now is that an area say, Indonesia, Haiti, or Chile, and now the West Coast, will have a pattern of these 4 and 5 quakes, a sort of a build up that becomes a bit more sustained. And then, there will seem to be smaller swarms, in addition to these 4/5's, then there will be the occasional 6/7, very soon after this pattern emerges, the high 7 or 8 quakes happens.
I've been thinking that this may also happen with the Madrid, so it's a pattern to watch for, possibly. Because of this I think people will have some warnings, so it will easier to make decisions about how to proceed.
Alesiah, we saw that too, the downgrade, I mean, when I heard about this I thought immediately of you and Coedwig. I think the druid is still visiting family. How close were you to this? Did you feel this, too?
It's too weird to me that I posted the Ways to Earthquake Proof Your Home/Stuffyesterday, because I noticed that this had not been covered yet here on this ning, and I keep feeling as if people everywhere may want to look at how to secure things to prevent damage in the earlier smaller quakes. Don't know how much help these actions will be in any later, great quake actions.
Here is a news clip on it:
