Hypothetical #4: Fear

All hell has broken loose.  Hurricane-force winds are howling all around you, the ground is shaking in never-ending darkness. You constantly feel nauseous.  Rain is pounding the roof of your shelter, thundering in your ears.  A fireball explodes nearby.  The earth is moaning and groaning.  Noises you have never heard before are all around you.  You're in the worst war zone that has ever been.

You are deafened, you are blind; you are on a never-ending carnival ride run by evil clowns.  This has been going on for more than a day.  You're exhausted, your nerves are frayed, you're scared to death, you feel like you are starting to lose your grip on sanity.  The kids are past crying.  They sit silent and somber, smelling of excretions.  You feel death is at the door.

What can you do now that will help prepare you and your family to combat the fear?

  • Call me crazy, but I yearn for the "Laura Ingall" days.  I am actually looking forward to this, again as carzy as it seems.  :)
  • Yes, having the will to survive is the key.  And the coming events is all about the meek inheriting the Earth.  Those closest to the land will have the superior advantage to others when it comes to surviving.
  • You can make coffee and flour from acorns, white pine bark is good to eat,

I spent summers on my grandparents farm.  They were sharecroppers so I learned (during the summers) to do without a lot.  My Grandfather taught me so much about how to live off the land.  And him through his mother who happened to be fullblooded Cherokee.  I know I am luckier than others but I believe if you have a will to survive you will.

  • ALEX  Very good points
  • We as a society are so far removed from the food chain we will be lucky to even be able to survive off of hunting.....which I doubt because it is an actual skill.  As for eating insects....anything mashed up sufficient with a little salt goes down fairly easily, grinding into powder is another option it need not be consumed in its natural form....I recommend you all pick up books on edible insects, very very informative read.  Keep in mind I didn't say appealing or appetizing :)
  • Austin, I read that you should put the worms in a bag of flour for a while.  The worms eat the flour and then they purge the junk from their systems.  Definitely need to find what spices/sauces will mask any off flavors.  Chopping them up so they don't look like worms would probably help too.

It's the spiders I can't do.....eeeuuuuwwwww.  Worms at least look kind of like spaghetti.

  •  ALEX, BRIAN, AUSTIN AND CHERYL  aLL WE CAN DO IS PREPARE FOR WHAT WE THINK WILL HAPPEN AND IT IS EVIDENT THAT ZETA CROCK HAS INFECTED OUR MINDS AND THINKING STRAIGHT WITHOUT SOME SORT OF MENTAL INTERFERENCE FROM THEM IS DIFFICULT. BRIAN I DREAMPT A COUPLE TREES FELL ON MY TRENCH AND I DROWNED IN MUD. CHERYL MARK TWAIN WAS A SMART MAN. ALEX YOU HAVE THE STATISTICS THING RIGHT.
  • It's true, Brian.  Think of housework drudgery a hundred or more years ago.  Any non-electric appliance you can get now would be a miracle in the aftertimes.

But let's not forget that our ET friends will be helping too.  That's something to focus on, that things won't be as desperate as we think.  Having brought sufficient supplies with us gives them time to help the less fortunate, so there is another reason for preparing, just like in a hurricane...everyone can't be helped at once.  There are too many, even if only 10% of the population, that's still a lot of people.

As for hunting, all I can hope is my food supplies make it through, or I'll be eating worms.  Maybe.  People starve to death rather than eat something distasteful.  I don't know which I am because I've never been in that kind of a situation before.  Maybe I should start practic....eh, later, maybe, huh?

  • I read somewhere that of the 90% or so, many would survive only to die of starvation and exposure and violence in the aftertimes.  Sounds like being out of buildings and away from coastlines and protected somehow from the winds and shaking is half the battle.
  • My favorite Mark Twain quote (actually, it is said that he was quoting Benjamin Disraeli):

There are three kinds of lies:

    Lies,

    Damn Lies, and

    Statistics.
