  • Another idea is to use the trench idea and put a commercial dogloo or build a ferrocement dogloo.  It is the dome structure that is resistive to wind.  For people, you would probably need to build one since even the largest dogloo probably wouldn't be big enough, unless you are a small person.  The trench gets you below the window, the structure  protects you from rain and cold and debris in the air, and is earthquake resistant (to the extent possible, not knowing how hard they will be).  http://futurepets.com/cgi-bin/FULLPRES.exe?PARTNUM=DO25872&LARG... shows the largest dogloo I could find.  A dogloo would protect from rain and cold, and provide extra protection from dust and debris in the air.  This would work for one or two people (costwise), but for a family, it makes more sense to build a 20' ferroconcrete dome in a trench (bermed on three sides).

So far, the enhanced trench seems to make the most sense to me, in terms of speed of creating, cost, and protection from most of the earthchanges expected (except sinkholes and flooding, if severe),.

  • Chicken wire and hardware cloth.  Cool.
  • I don't see why not.
