It's called Zohydro.
Clinical Psychiatry News (3/13) has the story. West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin is protesting FDA approval of the drug. He's written a stunning letter to US Health and Human Services head, Kathleen Sebelius.
"...Sen. Manchin noted that the FDA approved the drug 'despite strong opposition from its own Anesthetic and Analgesic Drug Products Advisory Committee.'"
This is highly significant. The FDA turned its back on its own panel of new-drug reviewers.
Senator Manchin continues:
"Simply put, the FDA's approval of Zohydro ER, in its current form, must be stopped before this dangerous drug is sold to the public... [Zohydro] has up to 10 times as much hydrocodone as Vicodin and Lortab and will come in a formulation that can be easily crushed, snorted, and injected."
In other words, Zohydro, used as a pain killer, is a nightmare. If you've ever taken Vicodin, imagine a pill with ten times the strength.
"In his letter, Manchin raised questions about the drug's approval. 'I am deeply troubled that the reason for Zohydro ER's approval may be linked to allegations that the FDA gave manufacturers of prescription drugs the opportunity to pay thousands of dollars for the privilege to attend private meetings with FDA officials,' he wrote, citing news reports. 'Allegations have been raised that a new, scientifically questionable methodology for drug approval was created at these pay-to-play meetings.'"
"The FDA has denied any improprieties regarding those private meetings, which the agency has said were intended to help the FDA better evaluate evidence from clinical trials."
Then let's see every word of those private meetings. The FDA is a public agency. Let's see exactly what went on in those secret meetings.
For background: On July 20, 2012, Martha Rosenberg interviewed a former FDA drug reviewer, Ronald Kavanagh, for Truthout. The subject was FDA retaliation against its own people who didn't follow orders on approving new drugs, but instead relied on evidence.
Kavanagh: "...widespread [FDA] racketeering, including witness tampering and witness retaliation."
"I was threatened with prison."
"One [FDA] manager threatened my children...I was afraid that I could be killed for talking to Congress and criminal investigators."
Kavanagh reviewed new drug applications made to the FDA by pharmaceutical companies. He was one of the holdouts at the Agency who insisted that the drugs had to be safe and effective before being released to the public.
But honest appraisal wasn't part of the FDA culture, and Kavanagh swam against the tide, until he realized his life and the life of his children was on the line.
What was his secret task at the FDA? "Drug reviewers were clearly told not to question drug companies and that our job was to approve drugs." In other words, rubber stamp them. Say the drugs were safe and effective when they were not.
Kavanagh's revelations are astonishing. He recalls a meeting where a drug-company representative flat-out stated that his company had paid the FDA for a new-drug approval. Paid for it. As in bribe.
He remarks that the drug pyridostigmine, given to US troops to prevent the later effects of nerve gas, "actually increased the lethality" of certain nerve agents.
Kavanagh recalls being given records of safety data on a drug---and then his bosses told him which sections not to read. Obviously, they knew the drug was dangerous and they knew exactly where, in the reports, that fact would be revealed.
We are not dealing with isolated incidents of cheating and lying. We are not dealing with a few isolated bought-off FDA employees. The situation at the FDA isn't correctable with a few firings. This is an ongoing criminal enterprise, and any government official, serving in any capacity, who has become aware of it and has not taken action, is an accessory to mass poisoning of the population.
Fourteen years ago, the cat was let out of the bag. Dr. Barbara Starfield, writing in the Journal of the American Medical Association, on July 26, 2000, in a review titled, "Is US health really the best in the world," exposed the fact that FDA-approved medical drugs kill 106,000 Americans per year.
In interviewing her, I discovered that she had never been approached by any federal agency to help remedy this tragedy. Nor had the federal government taken any steps on its own to stop the dying.
And now we have Zohydro, a new drug ready to hit the streets. You'll know it when you see more zombies walking.
Senator Manchin has just introduced a bill to slap down the FDA approval of Zohydro.

He suspects manure runoff from one of several farms in the Newville area may have seeped into the underground spring that supplies his water. Complicating the issue, he said, is the high amount of limestone in that part of Cumberland County. "Somebody found a sinkhole with their manure and I don't how much of it had to run in for this to happen, but you know, it's unfortunate." He's now borrowed about 20 aerators to continually pump water into troughs for his surviving fish, which are swimming in murky water that is normally crystal clear. "They're actually picking the water up and splashing it back onto the surface of the raceway to add oxygen to increase oxygen levels in the water to keep the fish alive," he said. The Pa. Department of Environmental Protection is investigating and has run field tests at the North Newton Township farm twice so far. A spokesperson told abc27 they have discovered a definite contamination, but have not yet pin-pointed the source. Holt said a Shippensburg University professor's tests have already returned a positive result for bacteria found in manure, which makes sense since farmers usually begin spreading in the beginning of March. Holt said the loss of the fish has already cost him about $20,000, plus fuel and electricity bills are in the hundreds each day. He said he hopes to soon see an end in sight. "If we can't supply the fish when people want them, they're going to go elsewhere and we lose the business anyway," he said. "So it's kind of a compounded issue." The cause of a major fish kill at a private Newville-area trout hatchery is proving to be elusive, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Environmental Protection said Monday.
Lisa Kasianowitz said experts from DEP and the Cumberland County Conservation District have twice investigated the problem reported this month by Green Spring Trout Farms.
Both investigations on March 2 and Sunday showed lethally low dissolve oxygen levels in the spring that feeds the hatchery, but it could not be determined what caused the dearth of oxygen that was asphyxiating droves of fish, she said.
"No immediate source of the contamination was identified," Kasianowitz said in an e-mail.

| Hundreds of dead frogs have been reportedly found in a lake in the Curragh (County Kildare, Leinster Province). Water samples were collected yesterday - 25 Feb 2014 - after an estimated 250 to 300 dead or dying frogs were found in the area, writes Paula Campbell. An overnight analysis of the water sampled by the Herpetological Society of Ireland returned results that are within the normal range for a healthy habitat however. The primary clinical signs of the frogs discovered were dry, crackly skin around the neck area. There was also red discolouration in the skin of some of the frogs, known as common frogs, in what has been described as a 'mass die off' of the frogs in the lake. There are a number of possible causes of this huge frog die-off including being a target for rats during the spawning seasons as they become an easy target because they are worn out after all the frog reproduction. The Ranavirus, which causes internal haemorrhaging could also be a cause, alongside chytrid, a pathogenic water fungus which invades the immune system, giving the animals a crusty appearance. Skin swabs have been taken for DNA analysis in an effort to identify the root cause of this mass mortality occurrence. | |

Mass die off of Frogs in the Curragh
Hundreds of dead frogs have been reportedly found in a lake in the Curragh.
Water samples were collected yesterday after an estimated 250 to 300 dead or dying frogs were found in the area writes Paula Campbell.
An overnight analysis of the water sampled by the Herpetological Society of Ireland returned results that are within the normal range for a healthy habitat however.
The primary symptoms of the frogs discovered were dry, crackly skin around the neck area. There was also red discolouration in the skin of some of the frogs, known as common frogs, in what has been described as a ‘mass die off’ of the frogs in the lake.

A LAKE IN The Curragh, Kildare, has been tested this morning after hundreds of frog corpses were found around it.
The Herpetological Society of Ireland collected samples from the frogs and the water this morning to send for analysis after obtaining an emergency licence from the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) last night. There were between 250 and 300 dead frogs discovered.
Speaking to TheJournal.ie today, Rob Gandola, a member of the society, said there are a number of possible causes of this huge frog die-off:
Predators. Sometimes frogs are targeted during spawning season by animals such as rats because they are a bit distracted by the task in hand and are then easy targets because the are worn out after all the frog love-making.
- The Ranavirus, which causes internal haemorrhaging. Gandola said it is “particularly nasty” to amphibians and can be difficult to detect.
- Chytrid, a pathogenic water fungus which invades the immune system, giving the animals a crusty appearance.

| New eruptions were observed at Java's second highest volcano since yesterday evening. A series of explosions produced ash plumes rising 800-1000 m above the summit, the local observatory reported. This activity came after a steep increase in volcanic earthquakes from averages of approx 50 to more than 200 per day, volcanologist Mr Sudrajat from the local observatory told the press. The first explosion occurred Monday evening at 20:06, causing the glass windows of the observatory building to vibrate. Shortly after, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) raised the status of Mount Slamet from normal to alert (2 on a scale of 1-4). According to local press, the vibration from the eruption could be felt in up to 10 km distance and described the plume as "thick smoke". Slamet is one of Java's most active volcanoes and often has strombolian to vulcanian-type activity in its summit crater. |

Volcano Hiking Routes Closed as Mount Slamet Put on Alert in Central Java
Jakarta/Purbalingga. Indonesia’s geological agency sounded an alert for the Central Java volcano Mount Slamet on Tuesday, advising hikers to avoid the crater rim but falling short of instructing local communities to evacuate.
“It started on Monday evening at 9 p.m,” said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, head of the National Disaster Response Agency (BNPB), in a text message sent on Tuesday.
The Center of Volcanic and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) raised the status of Mount Slamet in Central Java activity to the second level of alert: waspada.
Sutopo said volcanic activity was a potential risk for five sub-districts located around Mount Slamet: Banyumas, Brebes, Pembalang, Purbalingga and Tegal.
The PVMBG has recorded 441 minor quakes and 9 shallow volcanic quakes since March 8.
“We suggest residents stay calm and not panic,” Sutopo said. ”We also recommend tourists, hikers and residents do not to hike the mountain or do anything within the two-kilometer radius of Mount Slamet’s crater.”
The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has not warned residents directly.
“We have not officially warned the people living in around Mount Slamet, especially the ones in Purbalingga sub-district, like Kutabawa village, Karangreja ward, and others,” Purbalingga BPBD chief Priyo Satmoko said on Tueday.

Consumer Groups Sue FDA Over Mercury in Seafood

Earthjustice, along with Center for Science in the Public Interest and the Mercury Policy Project, are suing the FDA for “failing to respond to a July 2011 petition in which the groups asked the FDA to give consumers clear, accurate, and accessible information about toxic mercury in the seafood they eat.” At this time, the latest recommendations for pregnant women eating shellfish are to avoid certain species, and eat up to 12 ounces a week of other fish. Those recommendations were set in 2004.
The lawsuit asks for a court-ordered deadline for the FDA to respond to its request that signs be required at seafood counters and on seafood labels to let consumers know how much mercury is in the fish they buy. The FDA had 180 days, three years ago, to respond to the petition, but did not.
Mercury content in seafood is a concern and has been for years. Airborne mercury comes from coal-fired power plants and gold mining. It falls into the ocean, where it is converted into methyl mercury, which is a neurotoxin. That concentrates in fish and shellfish. Methylmercury exposure is linked to lowered IQ, learning disabilities, and impaired cognitive functioning.

Activists sue FDA over mercury disclosures in seafood
Consumer protection and environmental advocacy groups filed al lawsuit Monday, accusing the Food and Drug Administration of failing to act in response to calls for more public information about mercury levels in seafood.
The legal action follows a petition filed by the group Earthjustice three years ago, urging the FDA to require signs at supermarket seafood counters to telling shoppers about the amounts of mercury in fish.
The petition, filed on behalf of the Center for Science in the Public Interest and the Mercury Policy Project, also calls for labels on packaged seafood.
The groups say FDA officials had, under the agency’s own rules, 180 days to respond to the petition but ignored the deadline in violation of federal law.
