"If you get up any morning for the next few weeks, you’ll be treated to the sight of all the planets except Saturn arrayed along the ecliptic, the path of the sun through the sky.

"For the last two months, almost all the planets have been hiding behind the sun, but this week they all emerge and are arrayed in a grand line above the rising sun. Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter are visible, and you can add Uranus and Neptune to your count if you have binoculars or a small telescope."

Rare alignment of planets visible from Sydney

Astronomers and stargazers looked to the sky as the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter aligned over the southern hemisphere.

In an interview, Fred Watson, the astronomer in charge of the Anglo-Australian Observatory in New South Wales, said the planets often come together, but this time you could see four in the same bit of sky.

"The four that we could see on Friday morning were the brightest, Venus the brightest of all planets, and then Jupiter to its left and Mercury to its right and below sort of hugging the horizon a bit was the planet Mars," he said.

Watson said the planetary show might not be rivalled for another 29 years.
