Doomsday shelters making a comeback

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-07-28-doomsday28_ST_N.htm?se=yahoorefer

By Keith Matheny, USA TODAY

There are signs that underground shelters, almost-forgotten relics of the Cold War era, are making a comeback.

The Vivos network, which offers partial ownerships similar to a timeshare in underground shelter communities, is one of several ventures touting escape from a surface-level calamity.

Radius Engineering in Terrell, Texas, has built underground shelters for more than three decades, and business has never been better, says Walton McCarthy, company president.

The company sells fiberglass shelters that can accommodate 10 to 2,000 adults to live underground for one to five years with power, food, water and filtered air, McCarthy says.

The shelters range from $400,000 to a $41 million facility Radius built and installed underground that is suitable for 750 people, McCarthy says. He declined to disclose the client or location of the shelter.

"We've doubled sales every year for five years," he says.Other shelter manufacturers include Hardened Structures of Colorado and Utah Shelter Systems, which also report increased sales.

The shelters have their critics. Ken Rose, a history professor at California State University-Chico and author of One Nation Underground: The Fallout Shelter in American Culture, says underground shelters were a bad idea a half-century ago and they're a bad idea now.

"A terrorist with a nuke in a suitcase pales in comparison to what the Cold War had to offer in the 1950s and '60s, which was the potential annihilation of the human race," he says.

Steve Davis, president of Maryland-based All Hands Global Emergency Management Consulting, also is skeptical.

All Hands has helped more than 100 public and private sector clients with emergency management and homeland security services, according to its website.

The types of cataclysms envisioned by some shelter manufacturers "are highly unlikely compared to what we know is going to happen," Davis says.

"We know there is going to be a major earthquake someday on the West Coast. We know a hurricane is going to hit Florida, the Gulf Coast, the East Coast," he says. "We support reasonable preparedness. We don't think it's necessary to burrow into the desert."

The Vivos network is the idea of Del Mar, Calif., developer Robert Vicino.

Vicino, who launched the Vivos project last December, says he seeks buyers willing to pay $50,000 for adults and $25,000 for children.

The company is starting with a 13,000-square-foot refurbished underground shelter formerly operated by the U.S. government at an undisclosed location near Barstow, Calif., that will have room for 134 people, he says.

Vicino puts the average cost for a shelter at $10 million.

Vivos plans for facilities as large as 100,000 square feet, says real estate broker Dan Hotes of Seattle, who over the past four years has collaborated with Vicino on a project involving partial ownership of high-priced luxury homes and is now involved with Vivos.

Catastrophe shelters today may appeal to those who seek to bring order to a world full of risk and uncertainty, says Alexander Riley, an associate professor of sociology at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa.

"They're saying, 'I can control everything,' " Riley says. " 'With the right amount of rational planning, I can even survive an asteroid hitting the Earth that causes a dust cloud like the kind we believe wiped the dinosaurs out.' "

The Vivos website features a clock counting down to Dec. 21, 2012, the date when the ancient Mayan "Long Count" calendar marks the end of a 5,126-year era, at which time some people expect an unknown apocalypse.

Vicino, whose terravivos.com website lists 11 global catastrophes ranging from nuclear war to solar flares to comets, bristles at the notion he's profiting from people's fears.

"You don't think of the person who sells you a fire extinguisher as taking advantage of your fear," he says. "The fact that you may never use that fire extinguisher doesn't make it a waste or bad.

"We're not creating the fear; the fear is already out there. We're creating a solution."

"Another aspect of attaining a more pleasant and salubrious climate is the correction of Earth’s tilt. The dark energy moved her from a vertical axis to the tilt that produced seasons. This is being corrected as a part of creating a more pleasant climate worldwide. Another aspect of Earth’s transformation will be the removal of the artificial satellite that you call the moon. The dark energy placed it here many, many years ago as an observatory, and as a control mechanism. Your space brothers and sisters will remove it."

Mystery code in the solar wind

Published 02 July, 2010, 08:08

Edited 05 July, 2010, 14:56

When astronomers discovered a pulsar for the first time, they thought the regular signal coming from the star was a call from aliens. A similar
story happened in Russia, although it is far less-known to the public.

It started in 1938, when famous polar explorer Ivan Papanin and his team returned from the world’s first-ever drifting ice station expedition.
Among the numerous meteorological, oceanographical, hydrobiological and
other materials, the brave explorers brought with them films with photos
of a rare kind of aurora borealis.

The films had been shelved for several years and narrowly escaped a fire, when an incendiary bomb hit the Institute of Oceanography during a Nazi German bombing raid on
Moscow.

In 1949, the photos were shown by a fellow scientist to Igor Tamm, a famous physicist and future Nobel Prize winner. Tamm, who was researching high energy particles at the time, was greatly agitated,
after noticing that patterns in the luminosity of the aurora were
similar to those he had seen in his lab.

Tamm consulted Ernst Krenkel, Papanin’s radioman, and came up with the theory that aurora borealis could be used as a communication medium if a
powerful electromagnetic radiation is applied to the solar wind, which
causes the northern lights. He called the phenomenon “chromatically
modulated transmission” and submitted a secret memorandum directly to
Joseph Stalin, requesting finances and access to top secret equipment to
put the theory to the test.

The letter was reviewed by the Kremlin’s inner circle and the result was unlike anything Tamm expected. He was accused of being an American spy, and it took seven months and a
lot of political maneuvering from his influential colleagues to get his
name cleared. Tamm’s idea was buried for two decades.

It was in 1986, when the research of the strange aurora was actually carried out on the direct order of Mikhail Gorbachev. It is not clear how he ever
got the information on Tamm’s theory in the first place, but some
researchers suggest a link through physicist and human rights activist
Andrey Sakharov, who used to work with Tamm on a project of
thermonuclear power plant.

A small and top-secret research institution was opened in the northern port city of Murmansk, which closely monitored auroras. In August 1991, a breakthrough happened –
cryptologists working on three records of suspected communication
signals finally came up with proof that the northern lights really
contained information embedded it their colors.

A report was sent to Gorbachev, but on the next day, several officials and generals launched a coup d’etat. On that same day, a stolen fighter jet of the
Finnish Air Force crossed the border and crashed into the research
facility in Murmansk, killing 16 people and destroying most of their
records.

Three days later, chief of the aliens, who secretly rule the world, ordered the replacement of the transmitter on the dark side of the moon, which caused interference with aurora borealis.

Of course, the whole story has nothing to do with reality.
Skeptically-minded readers probably have felt it from the very
beginning, while those with a taste for mystery may have made it almost
to the end without feeling that it is bogus. The point is that, to a
certain point, people will not doubt what they are told, as long as it
is in tune with their gut feeling of how the world works.

It is not that bad actually. Our imagination, curiosity and desire for a miracle distinguish us from machines and animals. Somehow we need to believe in
UFOs, or in the “love conquers all” motto, or in special value of Apple
products. It probably helps us believe in other stupid illusions like
fairness, family values and the importance of human life.

And happy World UFO Day to those celebrating it!

People Begin Living Without Electricity and Water in California

People Begin Living without Electricity and water in California

I couldn't find statistics for local utility shut offs in my area, but Iknew we would start to see more and more of this.

Houses everywhere are going vacant. People don't say goodbye, they don'tleave a number, they just disappear. With their disappearance we addanother vacant house to the street. But familiesliving in housing without utilities is a new sight for me to behold. Ispoke recently with a rep from So Cal Edison who, full time contactsresidence who have had their electricity turned off due to non payment. She has anegotiator sent in and they work on a reduced payment. It's amazing tome, that now, it is becoming acceptable in California to camp out inyour home.

People are losing their homes, losing their cars and losing theirdignity. How are we going to afford kids clothes and school supplies forthe coming year? How can we expect families to pay for all theseadditional costs when the economy is in the shape it in. I ask myselfthis everyday.

Requests for help paying utility bills surge upward

Lightswitches, furnaces and water faucets aren't the typical gauges ofeconomic health, but at Pikes Peak United Way's 2-1-1 call center, theytell a tale of people who continue to struggle to pay their bills in aweak economy.

According to a report released Monday by the 2-1-1 Information andReferral Hotline, requests for utility bill assistance in the fiscalyear ending June 30 jumped 20 percent from the previous year, outstripping requests for help with food and rent.

"That's by far the biggest spike in looking at data year-to-year," said2-1-1 Center Manager JessicaJohnson-Simmons. "I would guess it would have something to do withrecent utility hikes that have gone into effect, but it's also a case ofclients just getting too overwhelmed with their...

I feel horrible; I know my kids must feel horrible," said MariaSchultheis, who lives in the house with her husband and twin teenagesons. "I'm humiliated because I never had to live like this."

The town water department shut off the Schultheises' water about a monthago after the family fell behind on payments on a $1,700 overdue bill.John Schultheis -- a computer programmer who has beenout of work for three years -- watched in disbelief as town workersturned off the water valve near the curb of his three-bedroom bungalowin a quiet middle-class neighborhood in the Lake Hiawatha section ofParsippany.

As the recession continues, utility companies say a growing number ofNew Jerseyans are falling behind on their electric, gas and water bills. For many, a flood of emergency funding in state andfederal aid programs -- coupled with a state-imposed moratorium onutility shut-offs during the winter months -- has helped keep the lightson and the water flowing over the last few months.

But, with much of the state money gone and the winter moratorium ended, utility officials say more and more families like the Schultheises maybe losing their electricity, gas or water service in the coming months.

"I do expect shut-off activity to increase the second part of the year,"said Victor Viscomi, PSE&G's director of billing and revenueoperations. "Some of the emergency-payment assistance money is dryingup."

PSE&G, the state's largest utility, has seen a 10 percent increasein families behind on their payments, compared with this time last year,Viscomi said. Many of those are households that had never had a latepayment until now.

Got out the old, high-school protractor and measured. My house is directly aligned N-S, E-W, as you may have remembered from my previous blogs. This morning, before 7 am, the sun was so bright, but not in the direct E-W align... That's when I actually measured... 30 degrees off, from 90 back to 60.. coming in at NE, not the direct E, of old. And last night, went to the grocery, 8:00 pm, the sun was still quite high in the sky, but SO bright, and seemed larger somehow. Anyone else notice these things, or do I need new glasses?
