In letter published in Der Spiegel, Snowden calls for global solution to dragnet surveillance
The ongoing revelations of the National Security Agency's dragnet surveillance practices are "causing society to push for political reforms, oversight and new laws," writes whistleblower Edward Snowden in an open letter titled "A Manifesto for the Truth" in which he calls for continued international action against the worst offenders of global privacy infringement.

The letter, published in German in the news magazine Der Spiegel on Sunday, highlights how Snowden's leaks have spawned a crucial debate on the NSA and other surveillance agencies' tactics, and calls for continued international pressure against such governmental overreach.
"We have a moral duty to ensure that our laws and values limit surveillance programs and protect human rights," Snowden writes in the letter reportedly penned in Moscow on Friday.
"While the NSA and GCHQ (the British national security agency) appear to be the worst offenders -- at least according to the documents that are currently public," he writes, "we cannot forget that mass surveillance is a global problem and needs a global solution."
That solution, according to Snowden, is now possible due to increasing public awareness.
Despite a "never before seen witch hunt" that threatens journalists who expose such governmental wrongdoings, Snowden writes, the NSA leaks have already improved public awareness and will continue to promote citizen based reform.
"Instead of causing damage, the usefulness of the new public knowledge for society is now clear because reforms to politics, supervision and laws are being suggested," he wrote.
"Citizens have to fight against the suppression of information about affairs of essential importance for the public," a translation by Reuters reads. "Those who speak the truth are not committing a crime."
"The world has learned a lot in a short amount of time about irresponsibly operated security agencies and, at times, criminal surveillance programs," he wrote. "The debate they wanted to avoid is now taking place in countries around the world."

A volcano in western Indonesia erupted twice Sunday, hurling red-hot ash and rocks up to seven kilometres into the air and forcing more than 1,000 people to flee their homes.
Mount Sinabung on Sumatra island erupted in September for the first time in three years, forcing thousands to flee their homes, and has been erupting intermittently ever since.
Early Sunday it hurled a column of ash seven kilometres (four miles) into the air, then erupted again in the afternoon.
Police and troops began evacuating residents from villages in a three-kilometre area around the volcano after the first eruption, said national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.
"1,293 residents living around Mount Sinabung were evacuated to safer areas," he said.
"The number of evacuees will rise."

Below-ground gas injection linked to Texas quakes

by Staff Writers Washington (AFP) Nov 04, 2013 A method of storing harmful greenhouse gases by injecting them below ground has likely triggered a series of earthquakes in Texas, some larger than magnitude 3, a US study said Monday.
The findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences mark the first time that carbon storage has been linked to temblors ranging from 3.0 to 4.4 in severity.
Researchers warned last year in the same journal that carbon capture and storage risked causing earthquakes, but there had been no direct evidence of such quakes until now.
The study focused on seismic activity in petroleum fields in Scurry and Kent Counties in northwest Texas, known as the Cogdell and Kelly-Snyder oil fields.
A process called water flooding was used in the Cogdell field to boost oil production from 1957 to 1982, and previous research has found that the practice caused small quakes in the area from 1975 to 1982.
More recently, methane and CO2 have been injected into the oil field at high volumes, said the research by Wei Gan and Cliff Frohlich at The University of Texas at Austin's Institute for Geophysics.

(NaturalNews) Increasingly stricken by a disease that leaves them shriveled, discolored and sour, Florida oranges are the latest target for genetic manipulators who are right now working on a new variety of genetically modified (GM) orange that could end up containing pig genes. According to The New York Times (NYT), the disease, known as citrus greening, threatens the entire domestic orange industry, which is why some of Florida's largest citrus producers see no other option but to fund the development of GM oranges.
Southern Gardens Citrus (SGC), one of Florida's largest citrus growers and manager of some two-and-a-half million orange trees in south-central Florida, is at the forefront of the push for GM oranges. According to reports, the company recently tried to battle citrus greening in its own groves, chopping down and burning hundreds of thousands of infected trees and bolstering its arsenal of pesticides. But these efforts ultimately failed, prompting company officials to seek various alternative approaches.
When scouring the world for an orange variety immune to the disease proved fruitless, Ricke Kress, SGC's president, decided it might be time to take a more drastic approach. According to the NYT, Kress and his boss had previously mulled the idea of developing GMO oranges when citrus greening first showed up in the state but were reluctant to actually go through with it due to the long-term damage it might cause to the citrus industry. Now, however, Kress believes that the situation is far more serious.
Though he admits that Florida oranges could naturally develop their own resistance to the C. Liberibacter asiaticus bacterium, which is believed to be the cause of citrus greening, Kress is not necessarily keen on taking this risk. Natural resistance could take just a few months to develop, he says, or it could take years or even decades. In the meantime, Florida oranges could end up going extinct, leading to the loss of some 76,000 jobs in Florida and the end of bountiful orange juice cartons on grocery store shelves.

The utility had intended to start removing the fuel rods from the unit’s packed cooling pool as early as Friday.
The test was requested by the Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization. The government-affiliated agency called for an initial test that would include transporting a protective fuel cask from the No. 4 storage pool to another pool in a different building about 100 meters away, to provide more stable conditions for cooling spent fuel, the sources said.
The agency has already inspected the equipment to be used in the operation on behalf of the Nuclear Regulation Authority. It has also urged Tepco to have its work evaluated by a group of Japanese and overseas experts formed by the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning, a Tokyo-based organization founded by Japanese government agencies, nuclear facility manufacturers and electric power companies.

There is probably a way to do this on a PC, but do you know how to activate text to speech on a Mac? I’m running the latest version of the Mountain Lion (OSX 10.8.5), and here is how I work it on my computer: Go to System Preferences/Dictation & Speech. On the Text to Speech tab, choose the System Voice and speaking rate that please you. Check off “Speak selected text when they key is pressed”. The “key” referred to is probably already set to Option + Esc keys. That means press and hold the Option (located two keys away from the space bar) and press the Esc key (located on the upper left-hand corner of your keyboard. Now highlight whatever text you want your computer to read to you. Press and hold Option + Esc. Your computer should now speak aloud the text you have highlighted. To stop the speaking, press and hold Option + Esc again. Older versions of the OS might have just a dictation tab. Play around in this option to find a choice that will appear to be dictation related. Why might you want to use this free built-in feature: You can highlight text, then activate the dictation by pressing and holding Option + Esc, and you’re computer will start reading your highlighted text to you. I do this when I want to read something but also need to do something else, like fold the laundry.

According to the new book “Double Down,” in which journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann chronicle the 2012 presidential election, President Barack Obama told his aides that he’s “really good at killing people” while discussing drone strikes.
Peter Hamby of The Washington Post noted the moment in his review of the book.
The reported claim by the commander-in-chief is as indisputable as it is grim.
Obama oversaw the 2009 surge in Afghanistan, 145 Predator drone strikes in NATO’s 2011 Libya operations, the May 2011 raid that killed Osama bin Laden, and drone strikes that killed the Pakistani Taliban leader and a senior member of the Somali-based militant group al-Shabab this week.
His administration also expanded the drone war: There have been 326 drone strikes in Pakistan, 93 in Yemen, and several in Somalia under Obama — upwards of 4,000 people overall — compared to a total of 52 strikes under George Bush.
In 2011 two of those strikes killed American-born al-Qaeda propagandist Anwar al-Awlaki and his American-born, 16-year-old son within two weeks.

According to Margaret Purvis, the CEO of the largest food bank in America, members of her Food Bank for New York City organization, are“panicking” over the decrease in benefits, fearing a rush of hungry Americans.

“We’re telling everyone to make sure that you are prepared for longer lines,” Purvis told NBC News.
I'll add my own story to this. Our local food bank dispenses once a month. October's box contained exactly one, count it... one... pack of meat. It was a small pack that contained two small ribs, mostly fat and bone. It wasn't even enough to feed one person. It did provide a treat for the dog, in the form of the bones.
They do give away other tasty treats in addition to the pack of fat and bone: GMO corn, GMO corn chips made with High Fructose Corn Syrup, Cheez-Its full of MSG and other chemicals, plus several miscellaneous cans of beans, tomatoes, potatoes, etc. For two people, for a month, a dozen eggs and one loaf of white bread.
That is the monthly food bank. We can get bakery products three Wednesdays a month, but it is mostly sweets, nice but unhealthy. Almost never any decent loaf bread, though sometimes some decent artisan bread.
My son lost $11 a month in food stamp benefits, not the end of the world he says. Not yet, I say. We continue to stock up as we can, but it's getting leaner and leaner.
If you read the recent article I posted about the LDS canneries scaling way back, and as I mentioned before, the time will come when they will be closed to anyone not LDS. Can't blame them. It's been very generous that they sold to non-LDS all these years. But the time is coming. If you are relying on the "best bang for the buck," there's still a little time left. But not much. The next best is probably Wal-Mart overall. Check their food out on-line, because they do carry bulk products you don't see in the stores.
And yes, the line was much longer than normal, which explains the shortage of meat in the boxes. I have a friend who is disabled and gets SSI. She really depends on those food boxes and it really, really hurt. The press has been making noise like people on disability are freeloaders. But there are a lot of people who really do need the assistance. Maybe SSA and welfare departments need to do a better job at screening applicants. And maybe predator lawyers who milk the system should be hung in the town squares. Just thinkin' out loud. Anyway, with the gov't spending millions to protect gov't buildings...
This has prompted some to speculate that the Department of Homeland Security is gearing up for potential unrest with its recent hiring of security guards to protect government buildings in New York, as well as the purchase of half a million dollars worth of fully automatic pepper spray launchers and projectiles that are designed to be used during riot control situations.

There are numerous alarming reasons why the US government and the military have been buying up all the ammo. Here’s one of them. Obama and the EPA just shut down the last lead smelting plant in the US. They raised the EPA regulations by 10 fold and it would have cost the plant $100 million to comply. You can own all the guns you want, but if you can’t get ammo, you are out of luck.

The asshats at the EPA (evil protection agency) had this to say:
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said the company “made a business decision” to shut down the smelter instead of installing pollution control technologies needed to reduce sulfur dioxide and lead emissions as required by the Clean Air Act.
The Doe Run Co. announced last year that it had dropped plans to build a new lead processing facility in Herculaneum that would have used a new, cleaner lead production technology. The company cited the $100 million project as too financially risky.
The EPA is playing Mafioso I guess — we didn’t make them shut down, they made a business decision. In other words, they couldn’t pay the extortion, so the thugs shut them down. I’m pretty sure that Americans are getting ready to make their own business decision regarding the Marxists and I don’t think it will be pleasant. But Marxists will do or die and are doubling down on the destruction of energy in America, our way of life and the Constitution.
The smelting plant has known since 2010 this was coming. They couldn’t stop it and no one else rose up to stop it either. The business had been in production for 120 years and now goes the way of our auto industry.
The military’s obsession with ammo was related to security and supply. They knew this was coming too, so they bought up all they could get before the plug was pulled. Screw the average American. It’s as Chris Muir said, he’s not as worried about where the bullets will come from, as much as how the government will deliver them and I’m right there with him on that one.
So, back door gun control is moving forward and while we are all distracted with shiny stuff, our Second Amendment rights are just about gone. Obama is one Marxist dictator who is savvy at political chess. He has flanked the Second Amendment. Now it’s our move.

To put this dose into perspective, a whole-body exposure to 8 Grays of high-energy radiation in a single dose has a 100% mortality rate within two weeks.[ii] This is a major (if not the primary) reason why radiation oncologists use 'fractionation,' breaking the total dose up into smaller fractions over time (1.8-2 Grays per day), in order to prevent the rapid death of the patient from acute radiation poisoning.
The primary adverse symptoms experienced by post-radiation treatment survivors is known as 'oral mucositis,' involving tissue destruction and functional problems in the oral cavity, which is painful, affects nutrition, contributes to local and systemic infections and greatly reduces the quality of life.[iii] There are other lesser known and potentially more lethal problems associated with radiotherapy, not the least of which is its ability to transform non-tumorigenic cancer cells into tumor-initiating ones (exhibiting cancer stem cell-like properties), but the medical establishment rarely if ever touches upon these downstream effects, many of which can not easily be linked to the treatment, or are conveniently written off as being caused by the recurrence of "treatment-resistant" cancer and not the inherent carcinogenicity of radiotherapy itself.
