All hell has broken loose.  Hurricane-force winds are howling all around you, the ground is shaking in never-ending darkness. You constantly feel nauseous.  Rain is pounding the roof of your shelter, thundering in your ears.  A fireball explodes nearby.  The earth is moaning and groaning.  Noises you have never heard before are all around you.  You're in the worst war zone that has ever been.

You are deafened, you are blind; you are on a never-ending carnival ride run by evil clowns.  This has been going on for more than a day.  You're exhausted, your nerves are frayed, you're scared to death, you feel like you are starting to lose your grip on sanity.  The kids are past crying.  They sit silent and somber, smelling of excretions.  You feel death is at the door.

What can you do now that will help prepare you and your family to combat the fear? 

They sound horrible but as long as you are not in a building, near a coastline or large body of water, or near something that could fall, there isn't near as much danger.  Japan fatalities were mostly from the tsunami and collapsing buildings.

People sat on curbs in front of their houses or other places, some were even walking in the road.  These were probably aftershocks but the Japan quake showed where the majority of the fatalities were. 

Areas on or near faults will experience worse quakes so, if you are near one, you should factor that into any plans you are making.
