Of course, Mark, I don't claim to have come up with the concept of a trench shelter covered with a metal or sod roof, but neither is the concept original with Troubled Times/Zetatalk. Trench shelters have been used in many wars because they are relatively quick to construct and provide protection.  This article is based on source materials dating back to French military operations in 1914-1918.  See http://www.151ril.com/content/history/french-army/15.  For your convenience, here are some relevant quotes: 

This article is about: "The subject of French army shelters and dugouts (along with trench construction in general)...."

The materials used to construct trench shelters: "The primary materials used in shelter construction in the French army were logs or wood poles, rocks and dirt. To a lesser degree, planks, sandbags, corrugated sheets of metal, steel rails and iron sheets were used."

Trenches for higher ranking officers is then discussed before coming to the lesser quality trenches for the common man's, the foot soldiers', trench shelters: "Last on the pecking order were the foot-soldiers. The conditions of their shelters varied, but in general they proved woefully inadequate for most of the war. Improvements only started coming about in the fall of 1917 to meet the demands of rebellious, discontent soldiers. Materials used in the construction of the foot-soldiers' shelter normally included sticks, wattles, gabions, and sheets of corrugated metal. To a lesser degree, sandbags, small logs, and planks might be employed. Universally, these shelters were dark, dank, filthy, vermin-infested holes or shacks that brought misery to every soldier."

On sod/metal roofs: "Alternately, a section of covered trench could be used as shelter, consisting of a simple roof of light logs or poles laid across the top of the trench, covered over with a layer of sandbags or earth up to a foot thick. However, abundant examples exist of less reinforced covered trenches that consisted only of a layer of light logs or a panel of corrugated metal straddling the trench."

On the subject of sod (contrasted to just plain dirt): "Shelters for soldiers in the rear were often just as inadequate and miserable as those up at the front.... A crossbeam pole rested between these, which supported the roof of poles or light logs, covered over with hay, straw and/or sod."

This is a fascinating article which everyone should read in its entirety for more ideas on how to build a trench shelter, plans that have been field tested.

Prof. McCanney says a lot of water will be coming in during the passage, lots of hydrocarbons mixed in (meaning polluted water), and ancient texts and geologic records confirm the same. As the French learned from experience, trench shelters turn into mud and collapse. So, Mark, the solution Zetatalk proposes not only did not originate with them, but is being disseminated as a solution, when in fact it is neither a solution, nor is it safe in the context of the extremes that will be generated by the object following behind Comet Elenin. Because I care about people, I am going to great lengths to try and make the trench shelter concept safer and healthier, as well as more comfortable as well as possible.

Also, please pause to consider that if you had posted at poleshift.ning what you posted here, except praising this ning, you would have been banned from poleshift.ning in a heartbeat.  But you weren't.  You were able to enjoy freedom of speech, which this ning promotes.  It's such a more pleasant atmosphere here.  And, look, you learned something.  Why?  Because you were able to ask questions, even though in a bit of an aggressive manner.  Education is important here.  What if we had just banned you.  You wouldn't have learned that your solution (if you are electing the trench shelter option) is fatally defective.  Think of all the people who will be relying on the ZT solution.  Most are going to die when their shelters disintegrate into a puddle of mud.  Now do you understand why I analyze?  Banning questions is just deflection because the material does not stand up under scrutiny. 

Think about it, Mark.  You are one of the few that has come here and can see we are not what she says we are.  Did you know I have run an earthchanges website and yahoogroup since 2003 (and continue to do so)?  I don't need any help.  I was sent to help Gerard.  Did you know Nancy and I were Gerard's first admins?  When I came on board in early January 2010, the membership was under 300; when I left, it was over 1,600?  I know Nancy drew a lot of attention because of her longevity on the internet, but did you know that during the time I was there that I referred over 700 members of my yahoogroup to poleshift.ning?  Did they tell you that poleshift ning's rules were written by me, in concert with discussions with Nancy and Gerard?  And why do you think Nancy bemoaned the loss of all my blogs?  They were substantial.  Did you know Nancy encouraged any poleshift ning member to commit theft by recovering one of my blogs and downloading two others without my permission and that they lost three copyright infringement claims because of their theft?  Who's copying whom?  I have documentation for all of this.  And do I sound crazy, post-nervous-breakdown, weak, and all the false ZT she's proclaimed on me.  Not hardly.  I've been here almost every day since I left poleshift.ning.  If you didn't know any of this, then you are only getting one side of the picture. 

UPDATE 6/30/2011:  Also realize that rolling would be caused by slip faults, which create a sideways motion and may not be the only type of earthquake.  I lived through the Northridge Earthquake, five miles from epicenter, and it was a thruster, which creates an up and down motion--a more violent earthquake--which causes your body to fly up into the air and then gravity brings you back down, and this would be a repetitive motion, thus more potential for damage.  Mountain building is a thruster-type earthquake.  The power at play would be like throwing a rag doll into the air and letting it land where it will, but with much more mass and breakable objects in the human body than a rag doll.  A better analogy would be throwing a carton of eggs into the air and see how many don't break after it lands a few times.

So far we have only received this warning from Forex.com. We are waiting to see which other dealers inform their customers that trading gold and silver over the counter will soon be illegal.

It appears that Forex.com’s interpretation of the law stems primarily from Section 742(a) of the Dodd-Frank act which “prohibits any person [which again includes companies]from entering into, or offering to enter into, a transaction in any commodity with a person that is not an eligible contract participant or an eligible commercial entity, on a leveraged or margined basis.”

Some prehistory from Hedge Fund Law Blog:

The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (“Act”) has changed a number of laws in all of the securities acts including the Commodity Exchange Act.  Two specific changes deal with certain transactions in commodities on the spot market.  Specifically, Section 742 of the Act deals with retail commodity transactions.  In this section, the text of the Commodity Exchange Act is amended to include new Section 2(c)(2)(D) (dealing with retail commodity transactions) and new Section 2(c)(2)(E) (prohibiting trading in spot forex with retail investors unless the trader is subject to regulations by a Federal regulatory agency, i.e. CFTC, SEC, etc.).  According to a congressional rulemaking spreadsheet, these are effective 180 days from the date of enactment.

We provide an overview of the new sections and have reprinted them in full below.

New CEA Section 2(c)(2)(D) – Concerning Spot Commodities (Metals)

The central import of new CEA Section 2(c)(2)(D) is to broaden the CFTC’s power with respect to retail commodity transactions.  Essentially any spot commodities transaction (i.e. spot metals) will be subject to CFTC jurisdiction and rulemaking authority.  There is an exemption for commodities which are actually delivered within 28 days.  While the CFTC wanted an exemption in which commodities would need to be delivered within 2 days, various coin collectors were able to lobby congress for a longer delivery period (see here).

It is likely we will see the CFTC propose regulations under this new section and we will keep you updated on any regulatory pronouncements with respect to this new section.

New CEA Section 2(c)(2)(E) – Concerning Spot Forex

The central import of new CEA Section 2(c)(2)(E) is to regulate the spot forex markets.  While the section requires the CFTC to finalize regulations with respect to spot forex (which were proposed earlier in January), it also, interestingly, provides  oversight of the markets to other federal regulatory agencies such as the CFTC.  This means that in the future, different market participants may be subject to different regulatory regimes with respect to trading in same underlying instruments.  A Wall Street Journal article discusses the impact of this with respect to firms which engage in other activities in addition to retail forex transactions.  The CFTC’s proposed rules establish certain compliance parameters for retail forex transactions, requires registration of retail forex managers and requires such managers to pass a new regulatory exam called the Series 34 exam.  We do not yet know whether the other regulatory agencies will adopt rules similar to the CFTC or if they will write rules from scratch.

Next, from Henderson & Lyman:

The prohibition of Section 742(a) does not apply, however, if such a transaction results in actual delivery within 28 days, or creates an enforceable obligation to deliver between a seller and a buyer that have the ability to deliver, and accept delivery of, the commodity in connection with their lines of business. This may be problematic as in most spot metals trading virtually all contracts fail to meet these requirements. As a result, although the courts’ interpretation of Section 742(a) is unknown, Section 742(a) is likely to have a significantly negative impact on the OTC cash precious metals industry. Here too, it is essential that those who offer to be a counterparty to OTC metals transactions seek professional help to discuss possible operational and regulatory contingency plans.

The actual rule language exempts a transaction if it “results in actual delivery within 28 days or such other period as the Commission may determine by rule or regulation based upon the longer period as the Commission may determine by rule or regulation based upon the typical commercial practice in cash or spot markets for the commodity involved;”

Alas, the commission has decided not to intervene and keep the exemption status window so small as to affect virtually all exchanges which transact in the gold and silver spot market.

Elimination of OTC Forex

Effective 90 days from its inception, the Dodd-Frank Act bans most retail OTC forex transactions. Section 742(c) of the Act states as follows:

…A person [which includes companies] shall not offer to, or enter into with, a person that is not an eligible contract participant, any agreement, contract, or transaction in foreign currency except pursuant to a rule or regulation of a Federal regulatory agency allowing the agreement, contract, or transaction under such terms and conditions as the Federal regulatory agency shall prescribe…

This provision will not come into effect, however, if the CFTC or another eligible federal body issues guidelines relating to the regulation of foreign currency within 90 days of its enactment.

Registrants and the public are currently being encouraged by the CFTC to provide insight into how the Act should be enforced. See CFTC Rulemakings regarding OTC Derivatives located at the following website address, under Section XX – Foreign Currency (Retail Off Exchange). It is essential that OTC forex participants seek professional help to discuss possible operational and regulatory contingency plans.

Elimination of OTC Metals

As for OTC precious metals such as gold or silver, Section 742(a) of the Act prohibits any person [which again includes companies]from entering into, or offering to enter into, a transaction in any commodity with a person that is not an eligible contract participant or an eligible commercial entity, on a leveraged or margined basis.

This provision intends to expand the narrow so called “Zelener fix” in the Farm Bill previously ratified by congress in 2008. The Farm Bill empowered the CFTC to pursue anti-fraud actions involving rolling spot transactions and/or other leveraged forex transactions without the need to prove that they are futures contracts.

The Dodd-Frank Act now expands this authority to include virtually all retail cash commodity market products that involve leverage or margin – in other words OTC precious metals.

The prohibition of Section 742(a) does not apply, however, if such a transaction results in actual delivery within 28 days, or creates an enforceable obligation to deliver between a seller and a buyer that have the ability to deliver, and accept delivery of, the commodity in connection with their lines of business.

This may be problematic as in most spot metals trading virtually all contracts fail to meet these requirements. As a result, although the courts’ interpretation of Section 742(a) is unknown, Section 742(a) is likely to have a significantly negative impact on the OTC cash precious metals industry. Small Pool Exemption Eliminated

Pursuant to Section 403 of Act, the “privateadviser” exemption, namelySection 203(b)(3) of the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 (“Advisers Act”), will be eliminated within one year of the Act’s effective date (July 21, 2011). Historically, many unregistered U.S. fund managers had relied on this exemption to avoid registration where they:

(1) had fewer than 15 clients in the past 12 months;

(2) do not hold themselves out generally to the public as investment advisers; and

(3) do not act as investment advisers to a registered investment company or business development company.

At present, advisers can treat the unregistered funds that they advise, rather than the investors in those funds, as their clients for purposes of this exemption.

A common practice has thus evolved whereby certain advisers manage up to 14 unregistered funds without having to register under the Advisers Act. Accordingly, the removal of this exemption represents a significant shift in the regulatory landscape, as this practice will no longer be allowable in approximately one year.

Also an important consideration, the Dodd-Frank Act mandates new federal registration and regulation thresholds based on the amount of assets a manager has under management (“AUM”). Although not yet underway, it is possible that various states may enact legislation designed to create a similar registration framework for managers whose AUM fall beneath the new federal levels.

Accredited Investor Qualifications

Section 413(a) of the Act alters the financial qualifications of who can be considered an accredited investor, and thus a qualified as eligible participant (“QEP”). Specifically, the revised accredited investor standard includes only the following types of individuals:

1) A natural person whose individual net worth, or joint net worth with spouse, is at least $1,000,000, excluding the value of such investor’s primary residence;

2) A natural person who had individual income in excess of $200,000 in each of the two most recent years or joint income with spouse in excess of $300,000 in each of those years and a reasonable expectation of reaching the same income level in the current year; or

3) A director, executive officer, or general partner of the issuer of the securities being offered or sold, or a director, executive officer, or general partner of a general partner of that issuer.

Based on this language, it is important to note that the revised accredited investor standard only applies to new investors and does not cover existing investors. However, additional subscriptions from existing investors are generally treated as requiring confirmation of continuing investor eligibility.

On July 27th, 2010, the SEC provided additional clarity regarding the valuation of an individual’s primary residence when calculating net worth. In particular, the SEC has interpreted this provision as follows:

Section 413(a) of the Dodd-Frank Act does not define the term “value,” nor does it address the treatment of mortgage and other indebtedness secured by the residence for purposes of the net worth calculation…Pending implementation of the changes to the Commission’s rules required by the Act, the related amount of indebtedness secured by the primary residence up to its fair market value may also be excluded. Indebtedness secured by the residence in excess of the value of the home should be considered a liability and deducted from the investor’s net worth.

Hi, Cheryl, and all members (and non-members), 

I've been thinking about another group meditation, and this is what I have come up with.  How about we set aside the summer solstice day of, June 21st, as an all day event, with no particular person being in charge.

On that day, then, when ever you happen to think of our dear Planet and the wonderful people thereon, all day long, project positive energy into the vortex not allowing anything negative to enter.. to each his own words and thoughts... That way we would not have to worry about time zones, and a person could 'tune in' even more than at any one particular time, lending even more energy where it is needed. 

In this way, we would have a 24-hour period of positive energy circling the globe, swirling, protecting, combating and defying the negative, may I say demonic, forces trying to take over our World.

It would make more sense if the mirage showed people heading to the mountains. I certainly wouldn't have gotten the message to flee a coastal from seeing a mirage of a city.  Ah, one could say, you weren't one of the chosen who received the telepathic message which provided more information.

In the example of the movie, Close Encounters, ZT offered it cited that certain people got zapped with a telepathic message. Does that mean that not all of the tens of thousands of people in town for the holiday weekend who saw the image that was visible for four hours didn't get the subconscious message, thus, weren't included in the full explanation of the message?

An argument could be, Ah, we said it was similar to but not exactly like Close Encounters. (underlined phrase is an example of leaving oneself some wriggle room, which means to leave oneself some room to maneuvre  by clever or devious means: wriggle out of an embarrassing situation, esp. when the truth comes out.  Lots of those kinds of words in ZT.)

Just for the sake of argument, let's assume they all received the telepathic message. Then why is the image inconsistent with the advice? Where are the mountains? And, going further, what kind of advice is it to seek a city in the mountains? Cities might be a temporary refuge now but why not lead them away from coastlines and into something more sustainable through the passage so they don't have to leave again, especially when the message appeared to be time critical? Hasn't it been a basic premise that cities, in their own way, are just as dangerous as coastlines during the coming upheaval?

Read the actual article.  It says that mirages have been recorded in that location throughout history. Uh oh. A fly in the ointment. Why was this day any different?

Mist is involved in these events. See the link above for the May 2011 event and comments.  Did you know Disneyland, back in the 80's, projected mist into the air which turned the air into a canvas to show their movies in the sky over the tall ship area. It was great fun, but even back then the technology existed.

There are way too many details for these to just be mirages.  Hologram tech, or earlier Disneyland tech are the best possibilities.  But, perhaps, it is a reflection, though not likely since an original would have to exist to be reflected. (Later, after one of msred's comments I could see that perhaps a sunken city could exist that sometimes reflects into the air under certain conditions like clear water and sunlight at a precise angle.  But even as I type this I realize that mist is present and while the mist could act as a canvas to project onto, the presence of mist would mean sunlight could be blocked, but because of land configurations there could be exceptions.  Anyway, an underwater city is the least likely. 

But no matter the origin of the misty city, the ZT explanation doesn't make sense if one is trying to get people to do something. Just the telepathy would have been plenty enough, and much less confusing.

BTW, this earlier China mirage was in 2006. And five years later, what has happened? Tens of thousands of people witnessed the image and at least some, but logically more, received a telepathic message interpreting the mirage. Has there been a mass exodus? Has anything at all happened based on this grand warning?  Nope. Nada. Negativo. Zip. Zilch. Zero.

My bet is enterprising business developers are playing on a natural phenomenon and now have the power to make it more realistic, so as to increase tourist trade in their area. What do you think?

To recap, the idea of a trench shelter is to get you below surface level to get out of the wind (and all the debris blowing in it), without going too deep that earthquakes could bury you.  Okay, so that takes care of wind and earthquakes.  The idea of a metal roof is to prevent fire on your roof from incoming flammable gasses that may ignite near you, fireballs, firestorms, etc.  Covering the roof in sod gives more protection, as a strong grass root system can keep the roof from blowing away and puts more barrier between you and solar radiation and fire.  Be aware, though, that sod/dirt is very heavy and it doesn't take much to weigh a ton.  Thus, it is important that you have enough underlying support to keep any sod/dirt covered roof from collapsing.  Another thing to consider is pressure.  With the passage, it is unknown if pressures will change.  The only thing I can relate this to is the pressure created in a nuclear blast.  So, what looks like good support under normal conditions might not be under adverse conditions.  This is why I urge you to make your roof as strong as you can possibly get it and seek professional help (like an engineer) to make sure it's safe. 

We also talk about toileting in a small space for an extended length of time, which is a closely related topic.  So, let's get going...

Human bodies tend to get sick if kept cold for too long and there will be a lot of rain during this event, as well as temperatures dropping because the event is expected to happen in the fall to winter time of year.  You will end up sick from a respiratory infection from being in the rain for days or weeks.  You need to keep warm and dry, as well as prevent debris from hitting you or breathing thick dust.

Another benefit in using a vehicle is that it has a metal roof, which would act as a secondary or back-up to the trench roof, in case the exterior roof gets blown away.  Of course, the windows would need to be fortified.  In the aftertimes, the vehicle would be a warmer space (earth temperature, but not freezing) to live in until spring, by barricading the open end of the trench with dirt and leaving a smaller opening to go in an out.

My latest idea is to get a very strong car like a Volvo or one of the older vehicles, like a Ford LTD Crown Victoria circa 1984 or earlier, that have steel frames.  Another idea is an old Chevy Suburban or a van, the kind with the barn doors in the back which would make for an alternate exit if the side doors become unusable.  Or even, as DuaneR suggested, an armored car, if you have the opportunity to score one.  Also, have a tool that could cut through the top of the vehicle, just in case.  Suburbans can be found with diesel engines, which for the mechanically inclined could be useful in the aftertimes. The vehicle doesn't have to run, you can buy it cheap and have it towed if close enough to your location. 

Dig your trench about three to four feet deep, or up to the windows of your vehicle, shallow enough to prevent from being buried by dirt as the earth shifts but deep enough to be out of the wind.  Make it wider and longer than your vehicle.  Angle the trench so you can drive the vehicle into it on one end but still be at an appropriate depth.  It is slightly angled so rainwater can drain out of the trench on the end you drive your vehicle in on, so your trench doesn't flood.  You can line the bottom of your trench with rocks so you aren't in a river of mud.  Make it longer so you will have room for a pacing trench if you need one (i.e., if you are not tall, you might not need one, the regular trench might work).  This would be a trench within the trench, dug lower than the floor of the trench your car is parked on, perhaps behind your car.  This will allow the occupants to be able to stand up and pace back and forth.  I had to take a bus back from Tuscon after the turbo blew on my Volvo and your legs start to swell when you sit for so long, not to mention you start to get edgy, especially toward the end of the two-day ride.  This would be needed while things are building up but when it starts to get bad, you may not be able to get out of the vehicle.  This is an argument for a larger vehicle, perhaps an old Chevy Suburban.  It has bench seats, a third bench seat.  Family members could rotate to be able to stretch out on a bench seat if it is not safe to get out of the vehicle.

Then get one of those metal carports to place over your trench.  Dig deep holes for the legs so that the canopy of the carport covers the trench at the surface but have the trench dug deep enough so, if you are unable to get out of the side doors of your car, you will have some space if you have to cut up through the roof to get out, you won't be bumping into the carport canopy right on top of the roof of the car and having to cut through it to get out.  You could cement the legs of the canopy if you have the money and time.  If there is enough time left, put a layer of sod over the roof with fast growing grass with a strong root system to further protect from the winds which could blow the roof off.  If all else fails, get a large piece of metal to use instead of the metal carport and fasten it down as much as you can.  Make sure there are no exposed edges for the wind to catch.  I saw a storm chaser video where a tornado picked up a firetruck and spun it around, so respect the power of these winds and take extra precautions.

For further protection, tie down the car in case you lose your roof.  In a different blog, Doug Copp mentioned a technique of tying down the mini-blast shelter by burying tractor-trailer-sized tires with long lengths of chain to weigh them down.  I don't see why it would be any different it there is a car in the trench rather than a mini-blast shelter.  In a comment at https://earthchanges.ning.com/profiles/blogs/mini-blast-amp-fallout, Doug says:

"Take steel cables from each corner [of the blast shelter which is round] ... have a scope (nautical term for anchoring a boat) of about 20-30 degrees...and about 100 ft long...bury worn out tractor trailer tires (off the rim) into a 3ft deep pits and fill them back in with the cable attached to it."  This should work with a car or RV or any kind of vehicle you might use.

I asked him, "Do you think the cable in the tires should be cemented in before burying them?" and he said, "Not necessary, just bury them 3 to 5 ft deep. They won't come out.  Make sure the tires are filled with dirt and not left hollow."

As mentioned, the car has seat belts and will offer protection from the bouncing around from earth shaking.  It will keep you warm.  It will keep the air cleaner (and by having the trench on a slight incline with one end open there should be adequate air exchange and allow rainwater to run off).  It will offer some comfort.  It will also protect you from any animals trying to share your space.  You should also have a gun and ammo in case you need to chase some snarly critter away so you can get out.

Since it is likely you will have to be in the shelter for many days, you need to provide for waste disposal.  The Chevy Suburban or a van would be a good design because they have moveable seats.  One seat could be removed to make room for a chemical toilet, or even a geriatric toilet lined with a garbage bag.  Another thing to consider is motion sickness.  With the earth shifting about, people (especially children) will get sick.  It will be very unpleasant to be surrounded by vomit and no way to clean it up.  Have plenty of barf bags and liners, and stock up on lots of motion sickness medicine.

Remember also, if the windows are electric you need to provide for a way to roll them down in case there is EMP during this event and it kills your electrical system.  You will need to crack the windows for air circulation because the air will be used up quickly in an enclosed space.  You don't want airtight or you will suffocate.  You can get a camping fan that runs on batteries to keep the circulation moving at Wal-Mart.  Another thing to consider is being able to dump your bags of waste outside of the car, unless you have the kind of toilet that uses enzymes and has a large holding tank, or you use Rosemary's suggestion of wood shavings and earthworms that will eat the odor-causing elements.

Also, make sure there is next to no gas in the vehicle because of the risk involved in explosion or fire.  I'm not sure about the safety of batteries or oil in such close quarters, like if they give off fumes or the battery could explode, so check with your mechanic.

Do not eat much during this time and make sure what you do eat is not salty, so you won't drink a lot of water.  This cuts down on trips to the makeshift toilet.  This is where a flushable chemical toilet would be superior to a geriatric bedside toilet lined with a bag, in the short term.  The chemicals would keep the odor down.  What I don't know is for how long.  That is why the geriatric toilet (http://www.emeraldmedicalservice.com/-c-79_54.html?osCsid=ef17031a006d84d6515a7aeab28ae8f1) is probably the better idea, with liners that can be disposed of.  Squatting is uncomfortable, especially for older people, so the geriatric toilet is much easier for them to use, as well as younger people too.  The older models can sometimes be found at Goodwill and other thrift stores.  Disinfect it immediately if you buy used.  Rather than an outhouse, this could be used outside the vehicle (but still in the trench) before escalating events force you into the vehicle for good.  Always test everything to make sure things fit, work, etc.  If the legs are too long for the space, cut them down or buy one with shorter legs.  Another idea is the "totable toilet." If you want gas for the aftertimes, use approved containers and bury them away from your trench.

The weak points are the windows.  While the vehicle will be under the canopy, if it blows off there would be no protection.  While the roof of the vehicle would still protect you from rain, the windows could be pelted and broken. Tempered glass is stronger than regular glass.  Then there is bullet-proof glass, but I assume that would be pricey.  You could also use other materials, like scrap sheet metal or plywood put over windows for extra protection, but be sure to affix it securely in case the exterior canopy goes.

Also, think about closing up the open end of the trench.  Would it be necessary?  (Necessary, if radiation is involved, or the first winds show it would be bad to leave it open.  Have a solution at hand if needed.)  If so, with what?  Sandbags?  55-gallon drums of water?  Would the wind just whip them away?  Should they be fastened somehow? Considering that a tornado can easily lift a firetruck, I would think, at a minimum, everything in the trench should be secured.  And the earthquakes could have things shifting left to right to left and/or bouncing up and down.  Factor that in as well.  Maybe we should bury ourselves in styrofoam "peanuts"?  (Joke.)

The overall appeal of this shelter is that the construction is doable by average people with commonly-available materials and is not out of reach price-wise nor will it take too long to put together.  If you can't afford the metal carport ($500-$800 depending on size), then use a big scrap of sheet metal or other metallic object like metal doors from old refrigerators, old car or truck hoods, or the barn doors off the back of old Chevy Suburbans or vans (make sure it's solid metal with no windows in any of them). If what you have doesn't look strong enough, use several, even mix and match metal and lumber, even box springs and mattresses, but put the metal on top.

I would like to hear some feedback.  Do you think this would work?  Do you see any other weaknesses?  If so, how could the weaknesses be remedied?

And, as a reminder, I am not a professional engineer and offer these possible solutions as educational material, food for thought.  If you choose to implement this shelter idea, it is your responsibility to ensure it is safe to do.  Something like this idea is better than doing nothing at all, and appears to cover many of the risks associated with the increasing earth changes.  However, it has not been field tested, so there are no guarantees.  In fact, it would probably be impossible to fully test since the upcoming event has never occurred in living memory and factors we could never imagine will probably crop up.

Read this very important next article.  Chernobyl proved infants are more affected by radiation.  Recent news indicates that Fukushima began meltdown within hours of the tsunami, thus since March 11, 2011, radiation has been spewing.  The animated charts tracking the radioactive plumes from Japan have clearly reached and spread across the US.  Those doing measurements and not scared to publicize the results are showing radioactive particles are on the ground and in the air here, in the soil, air, and drinking water.  Qualified professionals are now questioning the spike in infant mortalities during the times since the plumes arrived in the cities on the front lines of those radioactive plumes (meaning they received more radiation than those further away).  Note that the Chernobyl doctor got jail time for being a competent, caring doctor who knew what the radiation was doing to the children.  Expect the same from our gov't.  After Obama said don't worry, be happy, the MSM dropped the worst nuclear accident in the history of this planet like the literal hot potato it was.  Remember, our government's policy is to not create a panic.  That means hide the truth.  CDC statistics, as well as any others the gov't can control or bully, will be downplayed to keep Americans asleep.  Otherwise, we will all take to the streets and wave our arms wildly, spin around and bounce off cars and trees and other people, shoot our forbidden guns at invisible radioactive particles (because they think that we are that stupid!) and not show up to work, and make the Dow Jones Industrial Average crash and burn so a handful of people (elites) won't be quite so filthy rich as they want to be and not so controllable either.

However, radiation safety standards are set based on the assumption that everyone exposed is a healthy man in his 20s.

Now, a physician (Janette D. Sherman, M. D.) and epidemiologist (Joseph Mangano) have penned a short but horrifying essay asking whether a spike in infant deaths in the Northwest are due to Fukushima:

The recent CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report indicates that eight cities in the northwest U.S. (Boise ID, Seattle WA, Portland OR, plus the northern California cities of Santa Cruz, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose, and Berkeley) reported the following data on deaths among those younger than one year of age:

4 weeks ending March 19, 2011 - 37 deaths (avg. 9.25 per week)
10 weeks ending May 28, 2011 - 125 deaths (avg.12.50 per week)

This amounts to an increase of 35% (the total for the entire U.S. rose about 2.3%), and is statistically significant. Of further significance is that those dates include the four weeks before and the ten weeks after the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant disaster. In 2001 the infant mortality was 6.834 per 1000 live births, increasing to 6.845 in 2007. All years from 2002 to 2007 were higher than the 2001 rate.

Data from Chernobyl, which exploded 25 years ago, clearly shows increased numbers of sick and weak newborns and increased numbers of deaths in the unborn and newborns, especially soon after the meltdown. These occurred in Europe as well as the former Soviet Union. Similar findings are also seen in wildlife living in areas with increased radioactive fallout levels.

Levels of radioisotopes were measured in children who had died in the Minsk area that had received Chernobyl fallout. The cardiac findings were the same as those seen in test animals that had been administered Cs-137. Bandashevsky, Y. I, Pathology of Incorporated Ionizing Radiation, Belarus Technical University, Minsk. 136 pp., 1999. For his pioneering work, Prof. Bandashevsky was arrested in 2001 and imprisoned for five years of an eight year sentence.

Why should we care if there may be is a link between Fukushima and the death of children? Because we need to measure the actual levels of isotopes in the environment and in the bodies of people exposed to determine if the fallout is killing our most vulnerable. The research is not technically difficult – the political and economic barriers may be greater. Bandshevsky and others did it and confirmed the connection. The biological findings of Chernobyl cannot be ignored: isotope incorporation will determine the future of all life on earth – animal, fish, bird, plant and human. It is crucial to know this information if we are to avoid further catastrophic damage.

The reference may be outdated, but there may be more currant information on the web.

In Finland, one of the countries strongly affected by Chernobyl fallout, STUK or the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, did their own research on local, wild mushrooms. Their results indicated contamination with cesium-137 in their own exclusion zone, but also showed that radioactive readings were not uniform; growing conditions, uneven fallout and even the species of wild mushrooms affected how well radionuclides were absorbed [5].

After reading these references, I still do not really know what to tell people who may want to eat wild mushrooms while traveling in Europe. If, however, you definitely want to eat wild mushrooms and you suspect the possibility of contamination, there are some precautions you may take. The Finish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) has published a very valuable leaflet which provides pertinent information about what to do if you suspect your mushrooms are contaminated with cesium. This well illustrated pamphlet entitled Guidelines for Handling of Mushrooms, Reduction of Radioactive Cesium provides several options depending upon the state and species of mushroom – for example you can boil fresh or salted mushrooms in large quantities of water and then rinse thoroughly, or you can heat mushrooms in order for them to release their own liquid which is then discarded, or you may soak fresh or dried mushrooms, also discarding the water afterwards. Just follow the steps and you can achieve 70% to 90% reduction of cesium [6]. This pamphlet is a ‘must-have’ for health officers and an excellent reference for travelers. There is, however, another issue. The pamphlet mentions that you discard any water after use. That raises another question — how and where should the water should be discarded? Radiation fallout will not be removed by boiling, chlorination or purification tablets. The American Army Corp of Engineers recommends the following method to remove fallout (radioactive dust and dirt). It is called a fallout filter:

    “Punch holes in the bottom of a large bucket, and put a layer of gravel in the bucket about 1-1/2 inches high. Cover the gravel with a towel cut in a circle slightly larger than the bucket. Cover the towel with six inches of grayish soil dug from at least four inches below ground level. Cover the soil with a towel, place the filter over a large container, and pour contaminated water through. Then, disinfect the filtered water using either boiling, chlorination or purification tablets. Change the soil in your filter after every 50 quarts of water [7].”

The soil in the pail can be recycled, but the filter will have to be discarded. Since filters are considered low level radioactive waste, they can be disposed of by shallow land burial or by incineration [8].
